Building an allroad ultralight bike at the moment. Living in a high mountains area with most my rides having a 20/80 gravel/road ratio, and probably 2500m/100km on average.
The idea is to have a sub 1300gr wheelset to accomodate 30 or 32mm road tires (preference for 32), with decent aeroness and potentially lighter than 1300gr. Carbon spokes is my preference.
So far the contenders are:
- Newmen Streem Allround Vonoa: 49mm front, 54 rear, 18 carbon spokes, 32mm wide, 1300gr ~$1600
- Farsport 45/32G : 45mm front, 45 rear, 20 carbon spokes, 32mm wide, 1270gr ~$900
- Black Inc fortyeight: 48mm front, 48 rear, 20 carbon spokes, 29mm wide, 1278gr ~$2500
- CRW CS4045: 40mm front, 45 rear, 16f 20r carbon spokes, 29mm wide, 1180gr ~$1700
Any other wheelset I have forgotten?
Any opinion on the above list? I am leaning towards Newmen or Farsport at the moment given the optimized width for 32mm and good value.

Real world weights for newmen are being reported a bit heavier. We will see how stiff they really are. If they aren't lacking there, they're probably the best available, even with a tiny weight penalty.

Agreed. It either I go with the best all around option, which is the Newmen, or I go with the weightweenie option which is the CRW.
The 2 questions are: if going the CRW route is 30mm enough for my needs (not convinced) . And is the Newmen really better (more reliable, faster aero) than the CRW (again, not convinced)

All other things equal, I would always go for the wider rims. They will give a better aero performance with the fat tires, and if you don't care about aero, certainly better stability in cross winds is something to think about. You did say high mountains, so that means some fast descents. I'd avoid anything deeper than 40mm on the front also.

My vote is for the Farsport. As I have great experiance with them. I also have Newman Streem.50 (got them this year, but are now considered older model). They cannot compare with Farsport in any terms, but that model was still narrow. If you also do some gravel, I would avoid CRW, as they have only 100kg max load. So some big bumbs on gravel would be questinable.

Fair point on the width for cross-winds, and for other reasons mentioned above I think 32 is the way. So back to Newmen vs Farsport.
I love my current farsport on the road bike (28mm wide, 45 deep). I'm just surprised that I can't find any competition aside from the recent Newmen release...

Yeah they are a bit heavier, but if riding 20% gravel, I'd personally appreciate the robustness of regular steel spokes. But that's just my opinion.
If picking from that list, farsports is hard to look past for the value.

Yeah, I'm pretty set on carbon spokes for this wheelset. Having abused the Farsport 35/32G on MTB Rocky downhills lately, I am confident carbon spokes can handle the light gravel I'll throw at them on my all road bike.
I won't take the gravel carbon spokes wheels out in the wild anytime soon though. But so far no signs of issues

Another vote for Far Sports. I’m currently running the 40mm 24INT 30EXT and really rate them so far. I only have about 2,000ks but aside from the freehub slipping a couple of times on the first few rides they’ve been bang on. Weighing in 1,160 with rim strips I’m happy with the wait and for the price it was hard to argue.
I’m yet to run them on any serious gravel but I did purchase them with the intent to use them for the Strada Bianchi this winter.

High mountains have strong winds so CRW should not be your pick. I would add magene exar black series to the list
Interesting, I had never heard of Magene before, seems like they deserve to be on the list indeed. I like the Hub. A bit heavier and 30mm only though.
Do they publish aero tests? I couldn't find any (not that many competitors do!)

Patty did a review of the new version with steel bearings and is as good as the previous one with ceramic bearings. I myself prefer steel bearings. He rates those magenes at the top of all the wheels he tested. Great performance in crosswinds unlike crw. 30mm is plenty enough imo.
I sometimes chat with him privately and was asking him for an advice on new wheels and he told to me get the magenes. Also when hambini did the review he rates them very high all the measurements, hub everything was just top. For under a 1000$ those are no brainiers imo

Farsport Hyper 35. Done.
I have a set of CRW that I have only ridden twice since I got my Farsport Hypers. Subjectively (IMO), the Farsport Hypers are better than the CRW in every way. Despite the shallower depth the Farsports have proven to be faster in nearly all situations. I honestly can't explain it as conventional wisdom says the CRW with their deeper depth should be more aero, but over and over the segment times tell the story.
25mm IW front and back. 40% cheaper. ~100g lighter. Better looking. Provided with wheel bags and spare spokes at no additional cost. Hubs are quieter.
I believe the CRW are still better than the CLX in terms of weight/price/stiffness, but I find myself with no inclination to actually use them when I have the Farsport Hypers available. *shrug*
I hope this helps.
