It's the only way to ride when it gets properly cold, mudguards are useless, just fill up with snow and ice then jam. And when it gets a bit colder, it's so dry that the snow is either packed solid and like concrete, or like fine sand........

Lutefisk for all!!
No, just no. Never, it's nearly as bad as surströmming.

Nearly.

Ha. Yes in proper snow, mudguards definitely have no place, except for something like shown above at the rear. @Kampiakseli definitely gets an open pass to this thread. And other fat tire snow pics would be cool too. It’s fun. And I don’t know what strumofëlli or whatever you said is, but if it’s worse than Lutefisk, I’ll pass.

Here is my winter hack. Maybe not a proper winter bike since it doesn’t have any fenders, hell it even lacks derailleurs Image Nevertheless fenders and derailleurs would clog up instantly in these awful conditions.

And for the record: surströmming är asäckligt!

Sorry, these are removable. Here they are attached again, when temperature is below -20 deg. Or did you mean fenders for arms?

This is a serious winter machine. Damn it’s cool. Not in the ballpark of this topic. But this one is too good to make an exception.

My 60.000km old winterbike.
Almost everything is replaced or repaired exept the Magura HS33 and Son dynamo.
Even the Rohloff is repaired 3 times under warranty. Best choise ever to buy the Rohloff.

Here's my proper winter bike. I commute on it whenever it's too snowy for my road/cross bike. (And then take it on proper rides too, just not on the road!) It's a 130mm 29er hardtail built around a steel frame that I welded up myself last fall.

A few questions:
What is your gearing ? 38-11/42?
Which derailleur are you using?

40t absolute black
10-42 SRAM 1199.. but the 42 was swapped with a Oneup 44t
RD is Shimano XTR 9050 medium... with a goatlink but it's probably not needed, I had one so what the hell and it may or may not be needed if I run the E13 9-46t later.

Decided to go with this over the CAAD12, will stripping all the parts off the CAAD, Dura Ace Ultegra mix with Rotor power crank. BSA30 BB.
Got full SKS mudguards.
Hoping for a 7.5kg solid winter build with Zonda’s. Carbon post, bars, saddle etc.

I decided that full mudguards for serious winter riding are a must. Tuesday and Thursday 2 hour chain gangs and the long Sunday ride week in and out will wreck a bike very quickly.

I’m not really sure why people post super bling bikes without mudguards in this thread, I have some nice bikes I ride in winter but when it’s pissing it down and it’s 5° outside, there’s mud on the roads from fields I don’t ride them.
For me a winter bike can have top end kit no problem but it needs mudguards.

I’m guessing if it’s hammering rain most of these guys opt for the trainer.

@Multebear has summed it up well in his previous posts.

Seems like 7.5kg was wildly optimistic. Currently 9.2kg, will be fitting a carbon post and bars which should get me down to sub 9kg.
I’d forgotten the pleasure of riding a bike with full mudguards in the rain. 3 hours this morning and I arrived back home with barely any dirt on me at all, the same with the bike.
Without mudguards I’d have been stripping off in the garage and spending 20 mins minimum cleaning the bike.
Obviously you can feel the weight penalty over a 6.5kg Supersix but there’s something satisfying about staying with a pack of superbikes on your winter trainer.

So recently started commuting on my winter bike and learnt very quickly that you need mudguards. Also learnt that a saddle bag is pointless in wet weather.

So upgraded the Allez with my old Kysrium Elites, some SKS Raceblade Long full mudguards and a tool bottle. Need to extend the front guard a bit more though.
