I don't think Zipps have drainage holes.

Yes, there are (luckily).
Also, just came back from Dolomites, and happy to provide an update - excellent climbing set, great engagement by the hub, outstanding stability in descending and on top of this - amazingly forgiving both riding on not ideal tarmac and extreme cornering.

The latest 303S wheels have drainage holes. I have one set of 303S from last fall and those wheels do not have holes. Another set of the same wheels from this summer has the holes.
According to Zipp customer support it is also possible to get the holes added to the old wheels: the wheels can be sent to them for that.
Thanks for the info and photoIceLed wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 9:46 amYes, there are (luckily).

Can someone please explain why Zipp recommend 28mm tyres for both Zipp 303S and 303 Firecrest. I can understand 28mm being the fastest for Firecrest as it's the narrowest recommended tyre which would make the inflated tyre and outer rim width the same at 30mm. This however does not rollover to the 303S as the external width is only 27mm therefore a 25mm would make much more sense otherwise a 28mm tyre would be sticking outside the rim. I have fitted 25mm Schwalbe Pro One tyres to my wife's road bike they are pretty much flush with the external rim are super comfortable with Zipp's recommended tyre pressure therefore don't see what would be gained by fitting 28mm tyres.

They recommend 28s based not only on aero, but on rolling resistance gains, as they are assuming mixed terrain usage. That's where the Total System Efficiency claims stem from. Obviously if you're only using them in the road, 25s would be a better choice given rule of 105 and so on.

Is anyone running a 30mm tire on their Zipp 303 Firecrest? How wide do the tires measure?
It boggles my mind why Zipp keeps experimenting with their hubs so much.Spinnekop wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 8:53 amVery bad experience. After I have been an avid Zipp supporter - 7 sets of wheels, bars, stems etc - this will be my last buy from them. SInce their take-over by SRAM it has become a bit of a mess.
After about a month the local importer graciously offered to build a 177 hub into the wheels which I am now riding while I wait.
Timeline:
- 2010-2015 or so: Their (I believe) 76/176 hubs broke flanges regularly, and preload setting was a common point of failure
- 2015-2020 or so: 77/177 resolved problems with flanges and preload
- 2018-2020: Introduction of Cognition hubs, reintroduced common problems with slippage
- 2021: Introduction of Cognition v2 hubs to resolve previous problems
I've got the 77/177 hubs and those are faultless, fixing all of the issues of the previous gen. Why then update the hubs shortly after to introduce new issues into the market? A hub is a hub, there's not that much to innovate. DT is doing the same with their 240 EXP hubs altough that has to do with a patent expiring and their urge for proprietary parts. Zipp already has a bad name when it comes to hubs though, so to protect their rep I would assume they'd be more wise.
Anyone running 30mm tyres on the new 404 firecrest? 28mm tyres are sold out at my usual retailers.
I'm quite heavy at around 90kg and started wondering maybe I should go for the 30mm tyres?
Right now have 28mm tyres and there seems to be plenty of clearance. It's a Scott Foil 2021 and officially it can take 30mm tyres.

So I ordered the Zipp 404s. The wheels came with tubless tape and valves attached.
Front wheel seems good, but I'm not sure about the rear wheel.
Inflated them both to 4 bar. I didn't use any sealant, just to see if they hold air. Front was easy to inflate, Schwalbe Pro One poped nicely. But then the rear wheel didn't inflate.
I examined the valve and rim more closely and the valve hole is off-center. Is this normal?
Then there is somekind of plastic foil inside the hole. What's with that?
Also the inner surface has strange edge. Is it normal or a manufacturing defect?
I havent tried to inflate the rear wheel with sealant inside. Thought I'll ask first if what I'm seeing is normal or should I send it back?
Thanks,
Joe
EDIT:
Examined the wheels further and on rear wheel, I can see this strange plastic also in the spoke holes. Nothing on front wheel.
Found another spot where the inner surface is not smooth, the x like marks on the inside.
