Is the rim tape on my Roval CL50's already ready for tubeless?

I bought a pair of Roval CL50 tubeless ready wheels last year (rim brake version). They came with S-Works Turbo clinchers, which I kept on the wheels and rode.

The rear tire is nearing the end of its life and I'm thinking of replacing both tires with tubeless, either Continental GP5000 TL's or Hutchinson Fusion 5 Performance.

I was under the impression that the CL50's did not come with tubeless rim tape, and that I would have to put some on the wheel. Today, out of curiousity, I deflated the front tire and partially removed it from the wheel. I noticed that the rim tape underneath says "Tubeless Ready" (see pic below). So is this rim tape safe to use with tubeless tires?

According to the Roval wheel manual, "The rim strips provided with Roval road rims are not tubeless compatible." See https://specializedeuropebvhelp.zendesk ... eitung.pdf

But then why would they print "Tubeless Ready" on them?

Also, the guy at the local bike shop recommended Gorilla Tape instead of rim strips. Has anyone tried this? I would have to cut it down to size, but apparently it seals quite well.

I ended up getting some Stan's 55mm universal valves. They are short, but I can fit the pump onto them. Will these work with the Rovals, or do I need the Roval branded ones?

One more thing, I have an old bottle of Conti Revo sealant. I bought it about a year ago and forgot I had it. Would it still do the job, or does it lose its 'freshness' after awhile. It hasn't dried out, still liquid.

The existing tape is obviously "Tubeless Ready." The guy at your LBS sounds really inexperienced if he's recommending Gorilla tape for carbon rims / road tubeless. It's heavy and the adhesive is overkill...it will hard to clean residue when you need to remove it. Buy green poly tape / green powder coat masking tape / 3M 8992 to use should you ever need to rewrap the rim. 1"/25mm width will be fine.

I use Speed Evolution lightweight alloy valves with extenders on my ENVE SES 5.6s. 38+40mm front 44+40mm rear. Silca valves are also good.

Just use Orange Seal.

Any difference between the green 8992 and the blue 8991

I might try that 3M tape out. Is there any place in Canada where you can get it? Amazon.ca seems to have some generic stuff on for $15 https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HCT ... 6P31SHKZAY

But if I could find it at a store it would be save me shipping costs.

Blue/8991 is much thinner. I bought a roll, but have not used it out of fear that it’s too thin.

I always use two layers of tape. Not worth the risk of trying a single layer unless instructed as with Schwalbe tubeless tape.

You can try how strong the tape is with your floorpump. Put a circle of the tape in the end of the smart head and action the floorpump till the tape explode, the valeur on the pressure gauche indice you the strongeur of the tape.!!

Carbon drillings probably have sharper edges than any edges on a pump chuck...

Roval answered me per mail that the pre-installed tape is NOT tubeless compatible, but I've been riding it with GP5000TL for 2100 km without issues. Have they really been stupid enough to Mark a non-tubeless tape with "tubeless ready" just in order to market that the rim itself is tubeless compatible?

Someone at Specialized is confused and probably thinking of those elastic/stretchy rim strips.

Funny thing is, I asked them, then didn't care to wait for the reply and just mounted them. 2 weeks after, at 11 PM, when I'm at a hotel just getting ready to fall asleep the night before a 540km race with a 05:00 AM starting time, they sent the negative answer :)
