I am doing Mallorca 312 next week; 312km and 5000m of climbing
I have access to 3 sets of wheels; Zipp 404 Firecrest clinchers from 2017. Enve 2.2 tubs and LW Obermayers - both the latter are on Veloflex tubs
I know all three have their strengths and weaknesses; just thought a light hearted views would be some good Easter weekend debate !

I think I would go for the Enve tubs depending on the hub.

I would say it depends on weather conditions. If it’s raining I would not use the LWs. I personally don‘t like the Enve 2.2 as I find them to flexy and not stiff enough, but I weigh 85kg. Plus if is their original brake surface, that would put me off them as well.

The 404 are a very good Allrounder. Climb and descent well, and aero perfect for the long course. I loved them when I had them.

Really. A good set of road bike wheels will be great on the flat and hills in the dry or wet. Any set which can do it all is simply useless.

If the weakness of one wheelset precludes it being used in the hills of Majorca then put them up for sale.

Personally keep and use the set that brakes the best in the wet and overall is the quickest.

vote for the 404s. Its amazing how many cn++ts there are on this ride, and the ability to scrub speed quickly is more important than any other benefit. Weather wont be wet, mind.
Or, just tell Marshie to give up his mavics :D

sounds like we're talking rim brake carbon wheels. i'd be afraid of rain and find a choice of alloy rim wheels. sorry i know that's not a choice.

I've never been to Mallorca so could be wrong, do they have a lot of rain there?

So not true. :) Last September, some heavy heavy rain. So bad that cycling simply was not possible. Only on light rainy days.

Think thats officially rain.

Persnally i dont think a lot of the roads are of that great quality. Maybe i was unlucky last time i was there, but 3 punctured tubs is a fairly high attrition rate for 1 week. That'd rule out the LW's and Enve's for me

If it rains in Mallorca keeping the bike tyre side down is probably a bigger challenge than braking, roads were like glass last time is was there in the wet.

I’d go 404, with the gradients there aero probably trumps all.
