Hello all

Long time lurker here.

I've been planning a new build on a S-Works Tarmac Disc SL6. I'm fortunate enough to work in the industry, so prices are a tad better then they could be and my question is more about performance/ value.

I've got 5 wheel options on the short list and I'm after some real world feedback to make a more informed decision. I've listed them in order of cost, but i've got to consider whether there is a reasonable reason to spend more if the performace is similar.

Most

Roval CLX 50
Roval CL50
Spin Industries DM8 Revo (i've got a rim brake pair and like them alot)
Hunt Aero Disc 50

Least

Is a pair of Roval CLX 50s going to be significantly better (ceramic bearings nonwithstanding) then a pair of Hunt Aero 50s at significantly less cost.

Help me out, cheers

If it were me I would buy the best I can afford otherwise I will have doubts soon and maybe selling with big loss and buy the best anyway. Such a nice frame deserves great wheels. If you can have CLX50 for 1t GBP then you are lucky and go for it:)

Good advice! But what clarifies the best?!?

The CLX will unfortunately be quite a bit over 1k...

Hard to say:) I dont know Spin Industries. As for Hunt I have read somewhere that they are nothing special and their performance fit the price. I would choose Rovals. Wide, light, tubeless..good reviews. Only con is braking on rim brake version but that does not affect you. If you can wait you may search on ebay or here, sometimes good offers.

Spin are a UK company, likely to be imported rims, but built very well

The Rovals are going to be a great wheel, but likely to be 20% more expensive. Hunt have all the same features...tubeless, same rim width, similar if not lighter weight. Its a bit of a tricky one!

Hunt looks good on paper, but I have read somewhere that they are just average.. not in the same league with the best
May be it was somewhere here

or maybe Ronald Kuba..

How's the road quality?
What kind of grades are called "big" climbs where you live?
Do you climb a lot?
How much do you weigh?
Do you have a tire width preference?
How important is aero to you? Do you place the importance over or under weight?
Do you intend to run the wheels tubeless?
Will you own one wheelset to do all or are you looking to do a certain discipline?
Is speed or looks more important?
What's the deepest wheelset you've ridden previously?
Is your area very windy?

Roads are awful where I live, mostly
No big climbs (over 10-20 minutes) But steep, so sometimes up to 25%
Most rides have a decent amount of climbing
I weight 75 kilos day to day (192cm)
I prefer a bigger tyre as the comfort is noticable, so 25mm+ 28 if I can get away with it
I would choose aero over weight as I race a reasonable amount
Perhaps go to tubeless eventually, but all the rims above are tubeless ready
I will likely move the wheels between summer and winter bikes, but I'll have a separate gravel wheelset
Speed and looks in balance...
My current wheels are 58mm Spin DM8s and I don't find them too difficult wind-wise
Not traditionally but can be on bad days

I'd get the widest rovals, 64's I think they are called. Allows a mid weight rider faster riding on bad roads. Many 25c tires would measure 27-28mm which is what such a 30mm wide rim needs to be efficient aerodynamically. (The 50s aren't as wide I hear so they'll definately be slower on bad roads, but I get the looks argument).

Also a 64 is not slower than a shallower wheel for a stronger rider unless the _average_ grade of a course goes up into double digits. Anything less and you're constantly accumulating saved seconds. How much time do you spend over 10%, I'm going to guess it's less than below 10%.

The wheels provide the lowest hanging aero fruit when it comes to bike tech so even for a weight conscious bike it's prudent to consider aero wheels. If you ride at 50km/h the wheels experience twice that speed. Nothing else on the bike does that.

If you're always drafting a 50mm is not going to be slower aerodynamically.

I would choose the ones that looks best. Don't have any experience with any of the mentioned wheels. But from my experience, you'll be much happier with the ones, you like to look at the most.

Modern wheels above a certain pricetag are all almost equally good. The differences are tiny. Just look at the pro's. They don't ride the same wheels either.

Like others say...get one that appeals to you best.

That said, I recently bought an Enve SES 4.5AR and I was impressed witht he ride quality. my roads around me are pot ridden and there are always hills in all my rides. Its fitted with 28mm tubeless and feels very planted to the road. Bought them used off eBay...and when I got them, rebuilt the internals, so didn't pay full price.

Do you think the CL50 would be a good compromise at a cheaper price? Same look, same rims just less the bladed spoke and ceramic bearings...
