Alloy braking surface aero wheelset
Moderator: robbosmans
Hello again!
I'm thinking of adding some aero wheels to my current bike. Moslty keen for the looks.
I've come across the following as Aero wheels with Alloy breaking surface (whether carbon with alloy breaking surface or just alloy wheels)
Kinlin/Hunt Aero Race wheelset: 31mm deep, 19C internal/24mm external. Basically, my current build with more Aeros.
AL33 build: Apparently more aero than all other alloy rims. Sort of expensive in the builds I have seen. Some reaching HED Ardennes pricing.
Zipp 30 Course: Expensive. I like the looks of it, though. Some mention online about hubs not being in line with the wheelset's pricing expectation.
Cero AR30 (can't tell which rim it's using): 30mm deep, 17.5mm internal
Any other options out there?
I'd prefer a 19c internal because the Veloflexes are spot on size on this internal width, meaning 25mm is 25mm aand 28mm should be 28mm.
I've been caught in the rain before and breaking performance is hindered enough that I'd prefer to have a disc break bike, but no money now for that conversion. So, in order to make the best out of my current build I'd rather stick to an alloy breaking surface..

I'd love to embrace the wider rims!
Issue is that with my current set up, my Pro Ones are 28mm wide and my fork can't take any wider than that....
This is why I need to keep the 19c internal limit on the rims!
Gonna look for those HEDs!
Thanks for the tip!
25mm Pro Ones.
On my wheels, 25mm Pro Ones are ~27.5mm when new, 28mm solid after about 300km.
25mm Veloflex come up to 25mm solid...bit shy of 25mm when new.
Do Plus rims really widen tires that much? That's about 5mm from spec.
I imagine that 25mm Veloflexes would behave like the 23mm Pro Ones

I’ve found Rolf Vigor alloy to be very fast. I had a pair around 2008 but gave them to a friend as I had gained some weight and was at the 90kg limit which caused some flex and brake rub in the turns. The wheels are still alive & well on my buddies bike. I give them 2 thumbs up.

Various aero Shimano wheels have alloy brake tracks and rate highly (C35, C60).
Just buy the ones that look the best to you!

Looks like a US only deal, though!
I should then add, I live in the EU.
Yup!
I considered these, especially the C60s, but their internal 17c is putting me off.
I want those Veloflexes to be real 28s...
By riding their 25mm clinchers on my 19c rims, I learned that air volume is king for comfort and I'd like to maximise that.

I picked up some HED Jet+ 50s from Performance Bike for about $800 and love them. I think they may be different hubs/spokes than the 60’s and 40’s, so a little bit heavier (rim is the same, basically Ardennes with a carbon fairing), but they roll great and have stayed remarkably true. With Pro One 25c’s, sealant, and an Ultegra 8000 11-28 cassette, they come in just a hair under 2.7kg. Not a climbing wheel, but where I live you really have to plan a good route to break 3,000ft of climbing over 60mi.
