QUESTION For normal clincher/inner tube application and using a tape with glue on it:
Won't the glue come out on the sides of the tape from pressure ? Thus, preventing the tube, like a latex tube, to move feely inside the clincher, becoming messy and all...?

You have a point about glue, but once the tire is up to pressure, the tube is basically locked in place to the tire and rim. The tube doesn't move.

My LBS put two layers of gorilla tape in one of my 29er rims when I had them mount some new tires, which I didn’t find out about until I changed tires. According to them I needed a tighter fit for tubeless when I queried them later. I took the tape off and weighed it...+30g! Not only that, it leaves a glue residue that requires some time and effort to clean off. I put two layers of Stans tape on, saved +20g, and had no problem airing up and holding air with a compressor (which I didn’t have when I had the LBS do the work).

best width for tape? enough to cover up to the lip edge?

maybe i need to revisit the tubeless aspect and give it another go using powder coating tape.

I prefer it to reach at least edge to edge and if a little runs up the side of the wall that's okay. I don't want it to be narrower than the rim bed. If so I do one wrap up against one side and the second wrap against the other.

I prefer the tape ride up the sides slightly as well. Generally speaking helps ensure the tape doesn’t shift if the adhesive degrades over time. Also the tape in question only comes in fractions and multiples of 1” with 1” being suitable for 19mm rims and wider.

I generally try for at least 2mm wider than whatever the internal rim width is, but that’s not always available and I’ve gone as wide as 4mm wider (example, for my 21mm IW gravel rims I used 25mm Stans no problem).

Yeah, it’s thinner and conforms to rim bed center channels better than Tesa 4289. It’s stronger than something like Velocity Velotape (which I think is 3M 8898.) The adhesive is just right. It’s cheap and widely available. I haven’t actually weighed it, but I’m betting two layers is a fraction of a gram lighter than 4289...lol.

Credit goes to MTBR’s big tubeless tape thread. They seem to prefer Tyvek tape, but that stuff has to be cut down to appropriate widths.

That looks interesting. Can you tear it by hand? If so, I don't think it's strong enough.
