so Enve claims the new 5.6 is the better version of the 4.5, what are you thoughts? is it too much depth?

was waiting for these to hit... since 4.5AR might be too wide for my future aero bike wants. I rode around with 6.7s for quite sometime and I live in a generally windy area..There were only a few times I felt 6.7 were too sketchy.

ahh nevermind.. these are rimbrake..

"better" :noidea:

If you go by Hambini's aero tests in the subforum, there's a 5w difference between the 7.8s and the 3.4s at 30km/h, 37w at 50km/h. The 4.5s should be around 11w at 50km/h. I would think that 5.6s would test very similarly to the 4.5s at 50km/h (definitely insignificant at normal ~30km/h speeds). They are only slightly deeper (48/56 vs 54/63) but are also a bit wider which would be a penalty (the wider Shimano C60s tested the exact same as the C50s despite being 10mm deeper).

All in all, I would think it's a wash between them in terms of performance. If you're looking for wide road rim wheels and have the clearance for it, obviously you would lean towards the 5.6s but for me it's just a bit too wide (28mm front, 29mm rear). The 25.5mm front, 27mm rear of the 4.5s is just about perfect for me.

Psst. I've owned 5.6 Discs for 2 years (almost exactly the same dimensions.)

I think the 30k and 50kph speeds miss the sweet spot. Which is probably realistic for a breakaway rider of reasonable ability on flat group to sustain for a reasonable period solo. 50kph is pro TTT speed. 30kph is recovery ride speed. I agree the difference between 4.5 and 5.6 will be miniscule.

ok good... I still feel like a new 5.6 (disc) is due and they will announce as soon as I buy a set. :twisted:

This is a bad bet considering the 5.6 rim-brake wheelset has the same dimensions. It means they are satisfied with the shape/depth combination.

At ~29mm wide, the current 5.6s are well optimized for most 25mm tires.

Rim braked clincher shimano C60 tests the same as C50 because the rim shape is the same. Both are 50 mm deep and 22 mm wide.

I spoke with Enve yesterday and the 4.5 rim brake model will be put into the "Classic" line.

What does that mean, exactly? Will they be phasing it out?

So let me get this straight. Gone is the old 5.6. Soon to be gone is the 4.5. And the new 5.6 going to be more "stable and insprining in challenging winds" than than the 4.5?

I was confused @ first too... it's like this :

New 5.6 (rim brake) replaces 4.5 (rim brake)

No changes to 5.6 disc specific.
No changes to 4.5AR disc specific

Yep, there never was a 5.6 rim-brake. There was a 6.7 rim-brake which was discontinued 2 years ago.
