As a data point, I mounted 25c hutchinson tubeless tires on the 21.5 int/ 28mm ext x 36 deep wheels. These fit true to size on my 18m interior rims. They fit 28mm wide on the wider wheelset and align right with the outer. They were a pain to seat on the rim, requiring 120psi in the bottle and water on the lips.

Hello fellow weight-weenies,
I am looking for a new rim wheelset and found light bicycle.
Right now I am not really sure which rims to get, and I was hoping you could help me with my decision.
This will be my first deep section rim, I am quite light (60-65kg) and a litte concerned about crosswinds.
So far i was looking at a rim depth of about 45/46mm front and back, you think I should rather go with 35/36 front and 45/46 back?
Next topic is the rim width, 18/25 (int/ext) vs 21/28 mm. I think I want to ride on GP5k 25mm.
Is it stupid to ride the 25mm tire on a rim with only 18/25 rim-width? Or do I have to ride a 23mm tire on the narrower 18/25 rim?
Should I choose 21/28 rim with GP5k 25mm, like basically everone else on this forum?
I am a little bit worried about brake rub with the wide 28mm rim when riding out of the saddle.
tl;dr:
- light rider
- 45 front and back vs 35 front and 45 back?
- 25 vs 28 mm rim width?
I am also interested in your recommendations for inexpensive hubs..
Thank you for helping me!
Cheers

If you want to ride a 25tire at front its better to choose the 21-28 Rims
At your weight a 23front and 25 rear is better(lighter and more aero) so you can take also the 18-25 Rim
You can also get 35 front depth and 45 rear,no probs in wind
With your weight you can also choose Bitex Rar9 and Raf10,if riding often in wet Dt350 are better choice

I wouldn't get mismatched rims. I think the same height front/back looks way better. 45mm rims are pretty easy to live with day in and day out. I ride 50mm rims and only feel like I need to pay extra attention when the wind speed is over 15mph and gusty. And if it's that windy, I'm not usually riding anyway.
If they fit your bike though I'd get the 28mm wide rims with the 25mm GP5000s. Personally I'd go with 30mm wide rims and 28mm tires if they fit my bike.
You have to look at the big picture. You are talking about 3 watts. It's not a big deal. I have 25mm GP4000s (measure 27mm) on 25mm wide rims and you can't even tell from looking at it that the tires are 1mm wider on each side. If those few watts are important to you then make sure you match the widths. Is it stupid to ride the 25mm tire on a rim with only 18/25 rim-width? Thank you Pinguin and AJS914
Why would you choose an even wider combo? Just for more comfort on bad roads?
I have a CAD12, which afaik can handle 28mm wheels. If I build a stiff wheelset 28mm rim + 25mm tire should work?

28mm rim + 25mm tire is just about perfect.
Yes, I'd go even wider for comfort. I ride on lots of bumpy farm roads so a 30mm wide rim and an aero optimized 28mm tire sounds awesome.

I'm 60kg too and anything over 50mm gets a little sketchy in certain wide open segments that can get gusty (especially downhill). That said, I have two mismatched (like ENVE) sets: 55/65mm for fast, rolling-flat days, and 35/45mm for climbing or general not-so-serious riding. If were to only have one set that does it all it would ideally be 40mm (like Shimano tiers) but since light-bicycle only does 35 or 45 I'd go with the 45.GondolfoDiRucola wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 6:10 pmHello fellow weight-weenies,

I'm also of the opinion that if you go cheap on the rims then don't go cheap on the hubs. Light-bicycle rims with DT Swiss or Industry Nine hubs for around ~1200 USD.. hard to find better value than that I think.
As for widths... I have 25mm wide rims but it's really hard to find a matching tire to get it under. With a lot of 23mm clinchers they will go a bit past 25mm when worn in. The same 23mm tire on a 21-28mm rim would be around 26-27mm.. so the difference in actual width and practical feel is actually not much at all. The only limiter here is how much your frame/calipers can support for rim brakes. Now actual 28mm measured wide tire on 28mm or 30mm external (ie a 25mm tire on a 21-28mm rim or a 23-28mm rim) is definitely a different feel. I have that on my disc brake bike and gobbling up imperfect road is pretty satisfying.

I weight 63kg and I've been riding the 56x30mm wheels full time, including wind and climb. No worries. My 29er gravel bike gets blown around more. See page 3.GondolfoDiRucola wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 6:10 pmHello fellow weight-weenies,

Bitex hubs there, doing just fine.
When its wet I train on the gravel bike, so I only had two rainy rides on them so far when I was caught mid-ride.
If you are still worried get 46 front and rear. But thats unecessary IMO. Go deep or go home!
56s are great!
Just setup these tyres today. On 21mm innter rim gp4k 23 expands to 26.0 at 90 psi, gp5k 25 expands to 27.2 also at 90 psi. I expect both tyres to streach by another 1mm over time. The gp4k 23 looks great almost like it was designed for the wheel and I'll continue to use them until continental stop selling them.

Had and sold some 4.5 ar rims. Enjoyed the 28 pro ones on the rims, but wanted hooked bead to be able to use gp5 and other tires. Torn between the 56mm deep/30mm external/23 internal or the new 50mm deep/32 external. Like the idea of 25mm pro ones or gp5 being close to 28/29. Going with the newer rim kind of kicks me in to the 28mm tires, which would wind up around 31-32mm, which felt great but I think was not quite as fast as I would have liked.

The 25mm internal 32 external are to be used only with 28mm nominal tires, 25mm nah wouldn't try this shit
The 23mm internal 30 external are the widest rims I would use with 25mm nominal tires
