Cheap, Light Disc Brake Wheels
Moderator: robbosmans
Hi guys
I'm looking for some light climbing wheels that are shallow profile. I have followed a couple of posts, but no recent posts match me.
I currently have some deep section Chinese carbon rims, but clinchers that are a bit heavy... So looking for something for windy days in the mountains.
At the moment I'm thinking 30mm carbon (tubular?!) from china, with extra lite hubs maybe.. But quite pricey
Or.. Hunt 30 carbon at 1319g and £700 less VAT.. But I know their hubs agent the best...
https://www.huntbikewheels.com/collecti ... 27wide-999
Or even their aluminium wheels for half the price anx only 100g more
Any ideas /suggestions?
Thank you

I'm in japan, so would not pay vat = 20% off.. But any idea what the real weight is?
I looked at light bicycle, but thought they were a bit pricey for Chinese wheels (mine are 1700g-ish wish 240s and cost about £500....
Tubeless?
These rims are light:

But shallow and narrow. They'll probably be a little lighter for disc. Ask farports to build a wheelset with those rims, or just order the rims and get it done.

Farsports initially told me that in order to build me 'disc rims' (rims without a brake track) that my rims would need to be 30g heavier for 'reinforcement.' I told them 'no thanks' and they gave me standard weight rims without a brake track. Website stated weight for the rim brake version was 250 grams and mine came in at 253 and 254. 25 x 23mm tubular rims for what it's worth.Multebear wrote: ↑Sun Jul 01, 2018 9:07 pmThese rims are light:

I’ve put enough miles on my Chinese carbon MTB rims to know that’s not quite the truth.NickJHP wrote:Just remember Keith Bontrager's well-known quote: "strong, light, cheap, pick two".

I have purchased 3 sets of LB wheels. A lot of their new rims are going wider to provide better tyre support. What sized tyres do you want to run?JapanStan wrote: ↑Sun Jul 01, 2018 5:21 pmHi guys

If you have room to fit 29mm wide tyres and rims, then have a look at these. 28/28 spoke with DT350 hubs will come in at 1430g for US$943. You can go lighter on the hubs too.
These rims provide a wide rim for better tyre support and more air volume, and thus a better ride, with no added tyre weight. https://www.lightbicycle.com/29er-disc- ... bikes.html
I don't need 29mm thanks, nor 29er wheels - i have a road bike on decent roads now. At the moment I have a 28mm rear, 25 front, but changing to 25/25 soon (maybe then 23 front, 25 rear), 700ccemotive wrote: ↑Mon Jul 02, 2018 6:10 amWhat sized tyres do you want to run?

Thanks a lot
Interesting - my current wheels are from farsports, and have taken a lot of hammer so far! internal diameter only 15.5mmm seems low though.. was hoping for 17mm at least, for 25mm (or 23mm) tiresMultebear wrote: ↑Sun Jul 01, 2018 9:07 pmThese rims are light:

Take a look at their website, they have countless different rims. Wider rims will add weight. But if you're fine with that, then take a look at these ones:

Or these ones from Light-Bicycle:

Thanks yeah. Both pretty light for clinchers too... it puts me off when Lightbicycle advertise 'Toray carbon fibre' though.. it's a lie. I work for Toray here a few times a week, and they continually tell me these wheels are too cheap to be genuine Toray.. it's a pity they feel the need to lieMultebear wrote: ↑Mon Jul 02, 2018 1:28 pmTake a look at their website, they have countless different rims. I was also thinking tubularmight be worth a try.. http://farsports.cn/product/detail.php/id-295.html
