Looking for aero wheels in the 55-65mm range, around $2K
Moderator: robbosmans
I'm currently looking at the Reynolds Aero 65, new Zipp 404 Firecrest, and Bontrager Aeolus XXX 6. Not much info on the new Zipp's and Reynolds Aero 65. The Bontragers have some positive reviews. These wheels will be on a 2018 De Rosa SK Pininfarina. My original plan was to use my favorite wheels, Bora Ultra 50 clinchers. But I think I prefer something deeper. Let me know what you think?
Bianchi Oltre XR4, De Rosa SK Pininfarina, Trek Madone SLR, Giant TCR Advanced SL, Cervelo R5 Disk, Giant Revolt

Yeah just saw those. I have a pair of super lightweight DT Swiss Spline 28mm Mon Chaserral clinchers on my climbing bike. Incredible wheels. Any good reviews?TonyM wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 3:44 amThe DT Swiss Aero?

I have the DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut 48 DB on my F10 and they are fast and good in the crosswinds. I should have gone for the 62mm actually.
The 1100 Dicut have ceramic bearings. The ARC are the aero wheels.
Here more on these wheels:

The new firecrest are essentially the old nsw rims ie excellent. I have a set of the older reynolds aero 90 and they are quick and handle well. Braking is good but not perfect. I would look at xentis too. Great braking. Not as wide but the turbulator actually seems to improve drag - the narrow older were second behind the 303 fc in aerodynamics in an old tour test while being stiffer and much lighter. I have a set of 4.2s in yhe old narrow style and theu are bombproof and brake better than alloy.

German Roadbike magazine issue 9/2018 tested 5 aero wheelsets, and DT Swiss ARC Dicut 1100 62mm came on top. Braking performance was not measured, as the wheelsets were disc brake versions. In typical German fashion everything else was assessed thoroughly.
Too bad the test is only available in german.

I think if it was me I'd be going with the Bontragers, but its really just personal preference. They will all be great.
I would get the Reynolds for Aero
BUT for riding around and if braking is important, then I would get something with an aluminium brake track. My thoughts are you are going at zero speed if you crash.

I think the Reynolds hubs are better.GlacialPace wrote: ↑Tue Sep 18, 2018 5:44 amInteresting that you would say the Reynolds when the 5mm smaller Bontragers beat them at both speeds in your recent test. What's the thinking behind that? Slightly cheaper at almost the same performance?

Do they? As far as I know Bontrager uses DT Swiss internals, and Reynolds use Industry Nine.
