Weight Weenies

Currently running Hutchinson Fusion 5 Performance as tubeless, they weigh 250g dead on for the 700x25c.

Can anyone recommend lighter road tubeless, I don't really mind about longevity, just want to see how low I can go and preferably in 25mm width. All I can find are...

Vittoria Corsa Speed G+ Isotech Foldable Tyre...205g...but only in a 700x23c.
Hutchinson Fusion 5 Galaktic...205g... in 700x23c.

Bontrager R3 tubeless...190g...in 700x25c, but might have longevity issues.

I wanted to try IRC Tubless but all I have seen have quite heavy weight.

And I do have to laugh when I see marketing claims of 'Unique tread profile improves aerodynamics and saves 37 seconds over 40km', I'm sure there are many ways of making up or losing 37secs over 40km, or maybe I am being too sceptical?

Be careful with light weight tubeless tyres. There lifespan is short and they puncture easily. One chap at a race today punctured in the car park during the breifing. He had no worms, thankfully I did.

So do you think what I am running now is the lowest I should bother with with regards to a trade off between longevity/ saftey and value for money?

Bontrager R3 TLR are nowhere near 190g...lol.

Here I weighed a set for you. 328g for the 26mm version.

The lightest TLR tires I've come across are still the Fusion 5 Galactik 11Storms. The 25mm version weighs 220g. The older non-11Storms weigh 230g.

Looks like Hutchinson it is, for the time being.

Mind you, what is extremely annoying is that when you look at some of the reviews, the tyre specc'ed, the tyre in the pic, and the tyre weighed are not always the the same (yeah...road.cc). On the scales they are showing 328g, so it's kinda hard to get honest info at times, to make an informed opinion.

So I'm going to echo what bm0p700f said about being careful with really light weight tubeless tires. My experience with lightweight and "requires sealant" tubeless tires is that they puncture too easily to be good for anything but race day, and I'd even question that on open roads. Most of them get their light weight by not including a butyl layer, which is what keeps the air in sans sealant (which I'd still recomend including). Probably fine for crits on a closed circuit where you know whats on the road, but I'd keep them away from unknowns.

I haven't ridden Hutchinsons since the Fusion 3 came out, so I can't speak to any of their current tires. My current favorite tires in dry conditions are Schwalbe Pro Ones. Wet, I like the Panaracer Race A Evo3. Not sure the weight on either, but both have held up very well in regards to punctures.

190g is the approximate weight of the regular clincher version.

The Mavic Yksion Pro USTs beat the pants off Schwalbe Pro Ones in terms of puncture resistance. I think it’s interesting you say to be wary of light tires without butyl layers and then mention the Pro Ones. The Pro Ones are precisely that, light tires with a porous “MicroSkin” layer.

I’d say Fusion 5 Galactiks are less puncture prone than Pro Ones too, but they have pretty low tread life.

If you ride on smooth roads then going for the Galactiks should be fine? I used to puncture 1-2 times a year with inner tubes on the road conditions I ride so going for a heavy tire is not necessary. The ones you currently have or the Yksion UST's would be more all-round.

You need some puncture protection.

You could go lighter in the front but rear takes more of a beating.

The people that can get away with thin tires on varied terrain are lightweights and/or ride on mostly clean smooth roads.

A year from now, do you see yourself riding your bike more or still tinkering with your bike a lot? Going weight weenie on important elements usually means more tinkering. That is fun too but it gets old over time...

After seeing some of the replies above, I can't see me changing the tyres at present, and can happliy live with the 250g tubeless Fusion 5's. For the sake of dropping another 30g+30g front and rear, I don't think it is worth is for losing the 'robustness' of the ones I have on at present.

I might still try the Galactiks to see if they are much different, and just use them in the dry/summer, although in Scotland summer only lasts 2 days and the roads can be wet anytime!!!

Fusion 5 Performance TLR 11Storms are indeed very good. I'm running them now. 1000mi and barely any signs of squaring off. I have a 5-6mm cut and a few smaller ones, but none of the cuts have ever penetrated all the way through the casing. They're also incredibly grippy in both dry and wet. My 28s are almost 31mm on 21c rims...and weigh 279g.

Galactik 11 storm with 1400k's in, tire has 3 similar cuts in total. I have some Michelin Power Competition which are as light as the Hutchinson's but don't have a single cut on them. I know it's a race tire though, so for training the 250g tubeless tires are better.

I'm just surprised you still have the center mold lines / ribs on a rear tire with 1400km.

lol, not sure why I thought I've done 1400k in a week, probably confused it with another tire. It has 250k in it and already cutting.
