Berd polymer spokes

Finally ordered a set of spokes, the plan is to relace my XC wheelset (Extralite/29mm ID rims), the target weight should be about 1150g.

Nope, still in transit. I'll share the details when the package arrives and after LBS rebuilds the wheelset.

The spokes have arrived. Included are all the tools required for installation and the spokes in a thick box, with two extra. I plan to prepare everything for assembly, then haul the stuff to LBS. Hopefully they won't decline or I won't have to translate the building manual.

I just received my Farsports 25mm tubular rims for a new build. I may have to wait to build those wheels until I hear how these spokes work out. I was planning on CX-Rays but these would shave even more weight off an already light disc wheel build.

Do you happen to know his weight and/or power numbers? I'm closer to the lighter end of things but some bigger guys might be more curious about these spokes if this wheelbuilder is a bigger guy. The write-up has sure piqued my interest in them even though I have 48 CX-Rays sitting next to me for lacing my new wheelset. Thanks for sharing, I guess

I don't. He's a former MTB pro who got into super-endurance racing. Now he's a wheelbuilder and rides in western CO and eastern UT. Pretty nasty terrain; I live a couple hours away and regularly ride in that environment as well. He won the Iditasport Impossible* race at least once, and still has the human powered record for the northern route of the Iditarod Trail (which is 1,000 miles on snow in Alaska).

That looks interesting... Berd has started selling their product though, so they have a headstart...


Update - I emailed PiRope and they said the spokes van only be used on their own rims and hubs so it's not available as a kit for wheel rebuild. Berd spokes still more viable for us!

The build took more than a month for my one-man-LBS to complete, they stressed multiple times that I should have brought the wheels during winter, but what could I do if the spokes were released when they were released? They asked me to ride the wheels for a bit and then visit to check up on tension, it took several relief/tension cycles for spokes to stabilize, just like mentioned here, so LBS wanted to make sure everything's OK. Laced with berd, the radial lacing hub end on HyperFront becomes too tight for an O-ring to fit. I think the radial straight pull flanges can be laced with method number two, i.e. when spokes are fastened by spokes instead of plugs, gonna ask Berd about that. If everything goes well, I plan to build a road wheelset too, all other parts are already en route.

The previous iteration of this particular wheelset was 1280g with Pillar PSR X-TRA 1422 spokes, Pillar PT 734 aluminum alloy nipples, custom order 29mm ID Carbonbycicle.cc rims (375g each) and HyperFront/HyperRear2. Berd spokes dropped the weight to 1146g.

I'm surprised the weight savings is around 140g only, instead of the often touted 200+ grams. Did you expect it to be lighter as well, and is 200+g savings only for fat bike wheel builds?

The savings were exactly what I calculated, the previous Pillar 1422 are generally quite light steel spokes after all at ~4.8g. I suppose the 200g saving happen for folks who have more and heavier spokes.
