17mm or 19mm rims?

That Mavic article still sticks to the old ETRTO recommandations but meanwhile they are also selling 19C wheels with 25mm tires, which would not be approved: https://shop.mavic.com/de-de/comete-pro ... #1028=3283 :D 21C will only be a matter of time...

It just doesn't have disadvantages, except for higher weight aluminium rims (as not everybody wants to run carbon clinchers).

I use TRP 970 SL brakes (out of stock) as they open wide enough for 28mm wide rims.

I don't know, I'm not buying anything wider than 19mm internal, 25 external - I don't see the benefits, and even 35mm Bon Jon Pass Extralites @ 2.8bars work really well on 19mm internal rims.

I'll never go back to under 19mm internal for anything. I'm running Quills, SL23s, and AL33s as my road rims and love being able to run low pressure without the tires feeling squirmy. The Quills (21mm internal) with a 25 up front and 28 in the back is probably my favorite setup. Super fast on pavement but I can jump onto gravel and not feel jarred.

Interesting that the narrow outer width was faster head on to 5 degrees even with a tire wider than the rim. At racing speeds that's all the range that really should matter.

Yes, but

1. Does wind always come from the front?
2. How will one notice a 50 N out of 1,900 N drag difference? :D

The decreased rolling resistance will eat up that benefit any time.

BUT if you are really fast (let's say 45km/h average), stick with 23mm tires (and 19C will also be enough then), I agree.

That's a HUGE issue in the whole aero marketing push:

Data shows that you're quite unlikely to encounter yaw angles over 5°, but most aero-looking equipment (tall wheels & frame tubes) only start to work above that, and in head-on wind, narrow beats tall, even for frames.

Quite a few of newer Kinlins are now 19mm internal.

3T discus Pro, 3T Orbis II C35 Pro: both 19mm
DT Swiss ER 1400 Spline 21, ER 1600 Spline 32, ER 1600 Spline 23, ER 1800 Spline 23: all 20mm

Would you recommend an entry level pair of 21c wheels please?

Unfortunately the cheapest way will still be a custom build with aluminium rims: http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/quill-622

Chinese carbon rims will only be a bit more expensive: https://www.lightbicycle.com/Road-bicyc ... lable.html But you have to add customs and delivery costs.

The big brands as Bontrager, Enve and Roval are all $$$$.

DT R470 are 20c and much better price point vs. Velocity, if you can make 20c work. Or there’s the DT R500 at 22c, but it’s bit heavier.

I built CX wheels with R470 and they we’re really easy to build and have taken fair bit of beating with no problems. They did move to my wife’s cross bike, so they’ll likely last forever in that use. 25mm GP4000SII is 27mm wide and 23.6mm tall on that rim.
