Anyone using Crests on a gravel build?
Moderator: robbosmans
They are lighter than most carbon options out there yet 1/5 the price. If I am never going to run more than 40 psi would I have any issues with these? I can't imagine durability is going to be an issue when I have friends on them (albeit extremely smooth riders) who have gotten 4 or 5 years out of a rim in the woods.
Yes, have worked beautifully. I don't understand why more people don't use nice 29" mtb rims/wheels for gravel builds. Can get some bargains too on stuff that is 17-21mm internally too. No one wants that width on a mtb anymore but perfect for gravel.

I once bought myself a pair of Crest to build for my CX bike. Before building them, I tried to fit various tyres, as the rumour was that they were quite tight. I didn't manage to fit any tyre... I struggle to fit the first bead and the second only went up half the way... I was a long way away from being able to put a tyre on... and this was without inner tubes...neither CX, nor touring... didn't even try road tyres.
I decided to return the rims
Others seem to have more success, but ultimately they are meant for big tyres branded as 29er, things like 50 mm onwards, rather than tyres branded as 700c

We ran a pair of crest 29ers on my wifes CX bike for ~2 seasons and a winters training.
No issues at all.
Most tyres went on easily enough (no tubeless specific though, just normal folding bead tyres run tubelessly)
Only one we had an issue with was a pair of studded wire bead winter tyres. Which, to be fair, i've struggled to get on ANY rim.
The wheels are back on her XC bike now, replaced with stans iron cross on hope, which are also good....... if a little weightier.

The Crest MK III is our stock build for CX and it works great if kept under 40 psi. We use the DT Squorx nipple as the drilling is on the smaller side.

This is all good to hear, I couldn't see any reason why they wouldn't work but haven't seen them on many people's bikes outside of mountain bikes. I never run more than 70psi in road tires so staying under 40 on tires almost twice the size shouldn't be an issue. Also thank you for the nipple advice. I pretty much exclusively use Sapim Polyax so I wouldn't have known that.
