I've just bought a Cannondale CAAD12 disc with the Maddux RD 2.0 wheelset.

Looking into lighter weight options that don't cost the earth, from the big brands, but there don't seem to be loads. I've bought wheels from the Far East before and am happy to do so again, but cant find anything on ebay / Aliexpress.

I am thinking along the lines of a Kinlin rim, perhaps 28 / 24 spokes. Can anyone point me in the direction of something either in the UK or with shipping to?

This is my training bike which will be used in all weathers, but it will be used on our rather sprightly club runs etc so I'd like to get it down from the 20lbs it is at the moment and enjoy the ride a bit more!

Thanks. :beerchug:

Try contacting David Hunt at DCR Wheels: http://dcrwheels.co.uk/

I'm sure he can offer much insight on how to build a wheelset to meet your needs and price target. He graciously helped me source the custom white Bitex hubs that I used to build the wheelset for my disc road bike:

FWIW, the wheelset on that bike cost ~$550 total using Hongfu 38mm tall x 25mm wide carbon tubular rims, Bitex BX106F/R hubs, and Sapim CX Ray spokes, 24F/28R. Total weight was ~1450 grams.

Campy Zonda Disc. Fulcrum has a few options too.

Thanks for replies.

Any experience of Novatec 791/792 hubs?

What about the Kinlin XR31-T?

Not sure if this falls within your budget, but I have purchased two sets of Nox Composites Falkor 36D built with Sapim CX-Ray spokes on 24-hole DT Swiss 240S straight pull, centerlock hubs I provided for a ~1440 gram wheelset.

if you are happy with importing from China, i would think contacting Light Bicycle and seeing what option of rims they have, and go for DT350+CX Ray 24x24 ... or alternatively a UK based wheelbuilder with good rep.

Have you looked at Hunt wheels and their aluminium offerings?
UK based, good quality and not too expensive.

20h front is not the standard when running disc brakes. There are a lot of extra torsional forces in a disc brake wheel compared to a rim brake wheel.

alloy 24/28, disc specific carbon can do 20/24, some stock xc wheels uses 20/20

novatec: 20/20 f/r disc hubs

At least 2 others have mentioned Hunt Bike Wheels. Check their site and if you don't see what you like contact them. I went with their Aero Road Light Disc Wheels after looking all over (couldn't beat the price/weight/rep) and I couldn't be happier with them.

20/24 and 24/28 are rim brake spoke patterns. Disc brake wheels come in either 28/28 or 24/24 spoke pattern.

If you want a performance wheelset, then aim for carbon rims. I have no experience with Light Bicycle, but Farsports wheels are great.

I can't speak to big name off-the-shelf offerings, but from smaller builders and when building yourself there is nothing keeping you from doing whatever combo of spokes you want, provided that hubs exist to accommodate it. My road bike shown earlier has 24H/28H disc wheels. I'll probably go 20/24 on the next build with lighter rims just to try something different.
