I looked through this thread, twice, but I did not find mentions of the 2015 rim failures. Since this has been acknowledged as a process issue, has a recall been made? Have the affected customers been notified and had their 2015 rims swapped?

Recall no, as the first generation rims were limited release. All affected rims were replaced under our 2 year factory warranty program. Admittedly some of the claims took a while to process due to the nature of the issues - we had to figure out why the problems happened, then we had to refine/correct the process and only then could we replace the rims. None of this is an issue with the current generation rims.

Any takers to back up the statement about the new "V" shape rim? The industry slowly steered away from "V" shape due to less control in crosswinds. Last I checked, majority of rim manufacturers already made a splash with modern rim profile and that is "U" shape. Zipp has been pushing the envelope in last ~ 10 years, with toroidal rim profile.

I have a recent (two days old) customer testimonial that came in unprompted. I asked the customer for permission to post it here, and he agreed and provided more information. So here it is:
Original message: " Hey Victor. Just wanna give a shoutout to you regarding your 507 rims. Paired it with onyx racing hubs and sapim nv spokes, schwalbe one s pro evo 25c tubeless tyres with 30ml sealant each. The ride quality was very supple at 90/100psi. Rims were stiffer than my previous wheelset and the instant engagement from the onyx made the whole ride very sturdy (traction) even on downslopes. The best part was side winds whilst riding above 44km/h there was no drama and riding it as a tubeless, there was more tyre surface contact and i felt glued to the ground. Tight cornering at slow speeds was also very assuring. I am quite surprised the wheel balancing was almost perfect. Using the carbon brake pads provided, it builds up less heat but the stopping power could be better. Also i felt the brake pad's braking modulation could be improved, in contrast with swisstop black prince which i commonly use on my other carbon wheels. Overall, i am just very happy that i am running tubeless on your rims and to me tubeless is the future and i will running this wheelset as my main workhorse for a long run. These rims are really a great bargain and exceed my expectations. As a fan of your products, i am still waiting out for a size M non-disc Syn frameset. Victor, i would like to ask about your components, namely the stem and seatpost on the venn website where there are no description about it or any reviews. How do they fare in terms of performance? "
Follow up message: "Hi Victor, sure! By all means please go ahead. I have been favouring swiss side hadron, enve ses 4.5 and knight composite 65mm rims to be built as a wheelset. Price wise it is staggering just because of branding and i wasn't too sure if those rims could actually claim to be stable enough for cycling enthusiasts like me. I have rode clinchers and tubs for long time but always see tubeless as the future. I believe your design for the 507 had the perfect balance in terms of weight and actual performance. Actually the most critical thing i wish to highlight that most brand marketing would never say is the air turbulence that is generated when a vehicle, mainly a bus or huge prime mover trailer drives very closely to a cyclist at high speed. What happens is that the rider will be pulled into the air turbulence generated by the fast passing vehicle and sway out (speed wobbles and wobbling handlebar) instead of maintaining a straight line. In this case, the 507 had almost no drama and was stable from that situation. Most riders face this common problem in the real world and brands marketing never take this into account. The pros in the peleton have roads closed for the cycling event and are only subject to natural crosswinds. Here in singapore where i cycle to work for a stretch of at least 16km, easily i have 50 vehicles passing close to me. Your 507 rims is truly a work of genius, not flattering but it is the truth.
Wish you a great success for 2017."

Thanks for the transparency about this Victor. For peace-of-mind, what exactly was the nature of the issues? Were they all the same? What was the root cause, and how has the manufacturing process been refined to prevent this happening in the second gen rims?

No problem. Transparency is actually our market position, to my chagrin...
First generation issues:
1. Spoke hole reinforcement element was made of three separate arc segments. Joint overlap was insufficient to handle all dynamic loads. This was not apparent during machine or prototype testing. Now the reinforcement is one piece with sufficient overlap to handle dynamic loads during intended use.
2. Tire bed load varies with tire casing tension, tire inflation pressure is one variable that influences the casing tension. We collected more data for more different tire types and sizes and made sure that the tire bed has enough strength to handle whatever tire can be mounted on the rims.
3. Cosmetic/structural we moved to a different winding pattern that is now 100% consistent and exhibits zero fiber fraying during winding. This pattern is slower to wind, but as the winding step is much faster than the downstream steps this does not slow down the production.

You really sound like you have your shit together - thanks for being so open.
Now if only getting a set of rims from you would make sense for an end user in Europe... I just don't see a "business" case for me - yet :/

You could read up on the reviews of the latest Reynolds or Edco wheels. They(Paul Lew) where the first with this shape. I'm very happy with mine.

haha, thanks Marin.
Regarding rims in Europe...well we have wheels and will have some rims shortly here in Belgium. DPD charges about EUR 15 to get them to most places on the continent.

But why, as a consumer, would I choose your rims? I want *light*, 25mm wide, decent aero. So far, companieslight Light Bicycle have the right product for me.
I undestand that for OEMs it's a different case, but for me?

...well, our rims are 28mm wide, made to work specifically with 25mm wide tires, I designed the Venn 507 rim profile so I think highly of it and it works well in simulations and on the road. It really depends on what you are looking for.

I would be really interested in some wind tunnel tests to quantify the aero properties of 507's. I understand that doing tests in wind tunnel is not cheap but one can hope. Anyhow the 507 rev's are on the top of my list for next rims.

It will happen this year. After all we have a wind tunnel on site...

One more question. Can one use the black prince brakepads with Rev 507's?

I'd prefer it if you did not. We have no data on them.
On an unrelated note here is one more report. This time from our long term field tester in France, Olivier Brunel (permission asked and granted)
"For your information the VENN507 rims have endured without trouble more than 6000km up to now in winter conditions (snow, rain, wind..).
The rims are excellent, I have endure very heavy wind last week end and the bike was very stable, so I confirm the very good behavior with lateral wind.
For your information several riders who are following me on strava asked me some question about these rims (they saw the strava photo of my bike) and I strongly recommended them to purchase the rims. My understanding is nevertheless that not being able to propose external nipples may slow your sales. Keep in mind that only radial lacing creates cracks, so I believe that some minor changes on the rims should allow external nipples to meet customer requirement and then boost your sales"
Venn 507 rims are only available with internal nipples for now, until we (again) collect more dynamic data.
For anyone coming to Velofollies show in Kortrijk, you can see the 507 and other Venn rims (and the "notorious" Syn) there.
