I know... But, 23mm wide rims will make them too wide to race cyclocross and Specialized 33mm tires. I've already tried that.

Maybe 28mm / 21mm is more of a sweet spot.

I'm using 22.5C rim with 28mm tyres for 12,000km with good results.

I also ran 22C rims with 35mm tyres for 3000km.

Why do you say a 23C rim is too wide for 33mm tyres?

I think it is too wide in a sense that there is a UCI legal limit of what tire can be used in cyclocross.

UCI limit tire width, not by labelled width but an actual width. And the limit is right there, 33mm.
So most 33c for CX are a bit undersized to make it stay below 33mm on most rims.

Of course if you are not racing in UCI events (or in a rank too low no one cares about checking your tire width) then it's fine.

Actually, come to think about it,
Most people who race in rank high enough to care about UCI rules strictly, should already have a good team and sponsors. So wheels like LB shouldn't be their choice anyway. Isn't it?

Figure it out in reverse. What tires do you want to run? What rim (inside width) fits those tires best?

Well, I mentioned 25mm tires and I was (rightfully!) answered: it depends.

It looks to me that 28 rims should be surely ok, while 30 may be a stretch (literally).

Yes.

Cannondale SystemSix comes stock with Knot64 wheels. The wheels are 32mm wide on the outside, and they fit them with 23mm Vittoria Rubino tyres, which measure 26mm wide on the rims. that's 6mm less than the rim width.

So yes, a 28mm measured tyre on a 30mm rim is safe. A wheel width that is 105% of the tyre width is the optimal aero ratio.

So i just ordered my set of light bicycle wr56 wheels! im super excited but now im concerened about tire size. Why they didnt go with a 21mm internal width is beyond me. It seems like it would work best with something like a 23c tire or a much more true to size 25c tire but Is it even safe to roll with a 23c tire on this rim?

idealy id like to have a tire that is roughly 28ish when mounted

They say that most customers want to run 28mm tires on these rims...

But you can run 23mm tires on these rims - how safe that is, is the question. HED recommends at least 1mm less inner width than tire width.



Tour mag. ran a 25mm Conti 4000S II on Enve 4.5 AR wheels with 25mm inside on their last wheel test and they did only mention, that mounting the tire was a big problem. But it didn't come off obviously... Tubeless rims keep the tire in place, maybe that helps but I wouldn't want to recommend it because I lack experience here.

Have a read up on the Cannondale KNOT64 wheels as fitted stock to the Cannondale SystemSix. They are 32mm wide wheels, 21mm inner diameter, fitted with 23mm Vittoria Rubino Pro tyres, which measure 26mm wide on the KNOT64. On a 2mm wider 23C rim, a 23mm Rubino Pro would measure an extra 1mm wide, or 27mm. I think a 23mm GP4000 on a 23C rim will measure close to the 28mm as you are aiming for.

My wheels are built and on the way, LB 46mm with the grooved graphene brack track. Came out lighter than I expected too. Here are the pics LB sent me, I'll post more once I get them mounted up, along with measurements.

Well I’ve pulled the trigger on some 56mm lightbicycle 30mm wide, 23mm internal width wheels. Pretty excited.

In order to achieve 105% rule, the maximum width for a tyre on a 30mm rim is about 28.5mm...

I currently run GP4000iis @ 28cc & Schwalbe pro one @28cc on a 20mm internal rim. I generally run about 80-90 PSI.

The conti measure 32.5 and the pro one measures 30.5, so they’re out.

From this I’m assuming I’ll need to run 25cc, what width will they end up & what pressure can I get away with for the below? Just trying to squeeze the same ride feel out of them. I weigh about 80kg.

- GP4000
- GP5000
- Pro One

Would look at tubeless if that helped but don’t want to risk damage to the rims going to low on pressure...

The other question, might be a stupid one, is will a 25cc @ 85 psi feel the same as a 28cc @ 85 psi? In relation to comfort...

The GP 5000 is said to have more road buzz damping than the 4000S II - so maybe a 25mm with even a bit more pressure will be fine. But you can try it for yourself, maybe the 80-90 PSI are enough.

Regarding the 105% rule (it's for your head, you won't notice the aero benefits on the road): Even the 25mm GP 5000 will be very close to the 28.5mm on a 23C rim...maybe 29mm... The Cannondale Knot wheels have 21mm inside and 32mm outside - that's on the safe side, but with 23mm tires.

If that’s the case then 80psi shouldn’t be an issue.

Got my LB 46mm wheels today. Full report is in the LB thread, but mounted up a set of 25mm GP5000s, 85psi front, 95psi rear, they measured at 27.1mm, and the ride and handling were outstanding!! (I'm 84kg for reference)
