Cooking some speed - an aero road wind weenie.

Not going to be a weight weenie but hopefully the aerodynamics will compensate. Most rides in Singapore are on flat open terrain so this may turn out to be my main machine.

Why do cervelo insist on speccing head tubes 3 times the length that they should be for a given size?

According to tri-sports.com, apparently to do this -

"The fit on the S5 is optimized for the most important aerodynamic benefit a rider can have: Good position. The S5 has a higher head tube than other aero road bikes. This is actually more aerodynamic for the majority of riders since the head tube of the frame reaches to the rider, not a stack of round headset spacers. This is also stiffer laterally and absorbs road shock better. Many riders will use the S5 with no spacers at all, the way we see most bikes be ridden by the top pros. The problem for us, the non-professional rider, is we couldn’t ride most other bikes without headset spacers under the stem- it would be too uncomfortable. On the S5 your set-up and mine will look just like the pros on Garmin-Cervelo."

“You are more aerodynamic on an S5 with no headset spacers than on a lower head tube bike with 4 cm of spacers.”

Moot point I guess.

The fork is supposed to be slightly shorter than conventional road forks too and hence the longer head tube.

maxima - absolutely. Will also test if the rear chain stays have sufficient clearance for a Lightweight Disc for the odd occasion.

Looking forward to this build, I considered getting those very bars for my Felt. Would be nice to hear a review once you've had a chance to test them.

Very nice, I am a big fan of your builds Discoverspeed. This makes me sorely tempted to climb on the aeroweenie bandwagon with one of these maybe with Ui2. In particular I'm interested to hear how it rides, and whether it's noticeably faster than a standard road bike on a flat course with the same wheels.

Thanks guys for your comments. As most of the requests are for post-build / ride-feel tests, I shall revert to those at a later date.

At the moment, I am faced with a decision point - whether to set up the S5 closer to a road geometry (left photo) or Tri/ TT geometry (right photo)-

Instinctively, I am inclined to go for the Tri/TT end of the spectrum as:

1. I am more used to TT and Tri bike geometries right now (been riding Tri/TT exclusively for more than 8 months). Felt weird when I hopped back on my Storck 0.7is road bike. The working muscles were slightly different.
2. I am riding predominantly flat courses <5% elevation. Even if there are >5% inclines, these inclines constitute less than 5% of my typical course.
3. Going back to my road bike after months on TT gave me the shock of my life - aero makes a HUGE difference, especially if you don't draft during training rides

The only issue that is holding me back from setting the S5 towards the Tri/TT spectrum is that I would probably be using heavier components e.g. Rotor 3D+ vs THM Clavicula, aero handle bar vs traditional road bar/ stem, more padded nose saddle vs carbon light saddle

As it now stands, my paper build shows that my proposed S5 (Tri/TT set up) build will be closer to 7 kg. A weight weenied road build will be closer to 6.6 kg

The weight weenie in me is fighting the wind weenie in me!

SEQUIPA, yes the plan was to try with Madfiber but unfortunately my set is now under warranty claim - front valve blowout which caused some rim damage. Will put them back on for a test once wheel returns. Pity though, I loved how the Madfiber performed on my Tri set up. Nevertheless I hope the wheel does come back with no drama and I can post performance comments.

Meanwhile, I will weenie the build with Lightweight Obermayers. Build is progressing well...
