This new project is exciting and sad both at the same time.

Exciting because this will be a dedicated race bike build. Something I haven't done before and most of which I will attempt myself.

Sad because I had to make a decision about which bike to build and in the end went from what my heart wanted to what my head knew was the most realistic option. Originally I wanted to build up a Baum Cubano which would have been spectacular in every sense but upon doing the sums it turned into a good $8K plus project for a bike that will be used solely racing at my club crits.

So I have purchased a CAAD9 5 that I picked up at a bargain price from a a freind who owns a shop. I had them strip it of it's 5700 105, FSA Gossamer and Tektro parts build for me to start work on as soon as the new bits and pieces start arriving.

So here is the list so far;
CAAD9 Frame & Fork (Weighed in at 1975g in size 58 Frame, fork, headset, seat clamp and BB30 FSA bearings - these will come out)
SRAM Force BB30 Compact Group on order (Approx 2000g)
Deda Zero Servicio Stem (Approx 100g)
3T Doric LTD Seatpost (Approx 150g)
Wheelset Undecided (Maybe C24 Dura Ace - looking for something 1450g or less the DA at $750 is a bargain though)
Bars Undecided (Maybe EC90SLX or Ritchey Superlogic)
Saddle Selle Italia SLR Flow

I am hopeful of getting a solid race bike in at under 6.8Kg and when built and the parts stripped and sold off at a cost of no more than $3500.

Pics will follow shortly.

It won't be below 6.8kg.
It'd look tighter if you had matching bar, stem and seatpost.
Get a set of alloy tubular wheels for crits.

Yes you are right - I forgot to add pedals to my calculation so possibly will come in at just under 7Kg.
I agree on matched sets looking better but really for this build it's about cost and weight. The stem and seatpost look fairly similar and it would be worth another look at the Ergosum bars. They are a little lighter than the Ritchey and Easton as well.
Here is the frameset

Nice color!
I miss the days when frames had so beautifull colors and not just black or white.

I like that blue frame

If you want a dirt cheap seatpost with a nice weight, I'd look at KCNC pro lite or sc pro lite if you need setback. they are approx 90$ shipped off ebay. I had an sc pro lite for my caad9 and I weighted 173g in 350mm length.

have a look at my caad9 if you want ideas!

Okay so I ordered the Ergosum Bars and Doric Seatpost last night.
Bars are 174g according to the 3T website and 163g for the seatpost although that is for the 31.6 so I'm expecting the weight to come in at around 150g for the 27.2.
What I can't make my mind up on now is whether to go with the 3T Pro stem which will come in at around 145-150g for the 100mm length or the Deda Zero 100 Servizio which will come in at around 120g or less. On one hand there is the weight on the other aesthetics. The LTD stem is out. It is nearly 4 x the price of either of the others and at 114g I can't see the value.

I like where this is going

Make sure you check actual weights of DEDA. I had their stuff on my Colnago and it was a little over claimed.

I found 3T to be spot on so far though. Whatever weight they have on their scale (on the 3T site) matches the one I got on my scale.

Imo...I would go with the 3T instead of the Deda stem. To me, the Deda is too thick for the CAAD's 1/18 headtube.

Yes I agree - I have gone with the 3T - I can buy Ti bolt kit and still come in at just on the same price as the Deda so weight should be similar in the end.
Everything except wheelset is now ordered - Not in a huge rush for the wheels. I have spares and if I want the bike to weigh in at something closer to 6.8 I can always just throw the EC90's on. So just waiting for it all to start arriving so i can commence the build.
I'll do a full total on cost at the end of the project after I have sold off the parts that came with the bike and see how close I got to the 3.5K target.
Cost on parts has been pretty good.
Force Group $875
Ergosum Bars $210
Carbonio Saddle $153
Doric Post $167
3T Stem $54
Ti Bolt Kit $20
Ritchey Tape $12

That looks to be a nice build! I always loved cannon dales, so sad they went overseas though

Parts have slowly started trickling in.
Saddle, bars and ti bolts have arrived. Useless at this stage because I can't even put something on the bike so it feels like it's being built
Saddle weighed 134g - claimed weight is 125g
Bars weighed 185g - claimed weight is 174g

Here are some photos I didn't want have to take :(

Some of my claret

Mostly superficial damge to the bike and a stack of road rash on my arm and leg.
The worst damage to me was on my hand - a large peice of flesh completely ripped off the hand - the glove was torn and destroyed but completely intact over the wound site. It's almost as if the gel in the glove gripped the skin and just ripped it off.

These parts for the new bike can't come soon enough now.
Bar tape arrived this morning and I'm hoping for a delivery this afternoon on some or all of the remainder.

Yes racing crash - the reason I started the CAAD project in the first place. So I wouldn't have to worry about crashing the Pina..... :(

Stem arrived today.
Claimed weight 135g - Actual weight 133g - New weight with ti bolts 124g
