There is only 2-3 things I would change.
1. Chris king headset. It may be the best but a campagnolo record one would be the most appropriate.
2. Saddle. It looks too "modern" not that classy. A flite kit carbonio would be great (and lighter).
3. The stem has big and bold graphics. Something from 3ttt would be nicer maybe.
4. Not this bottlecage. Try a campy chorus or record.
A great bike nonetheless!
Wow, thanks everyone! I wasn't sure if I could pull off classic steel + new carbon look but I'm really pleased and glad to see most agree. I see a lot of retro builds with this frame but i wanted something light and weenie (as weenie as possible) but still complemented the retro of the frame + paint job.
I went with King becauce I couldn't get a fit in Black Record.
I agree about the saddle but Arione is what I have on my other bikes...I've gone thru so many over the years to find the one that "fits". The cage is the Sideloader because the frame is small and that's the only one you can easily pluck a bottle from...short people tradeoff.

Really gorgeous bike!
Any real weight of frameset?
It was about 3.25 but the fork is pretty burly too...can't recall the weight but all steel isn't the lightest.

Daddy yo yo wrote:it's always a little difficult to build up a classic frame with modern parts. i like the idea of that classic look with up-to-date technology of the components. photography is well done, respect!
however there are several parts that do not quite fit the frame. first of all the stem is way too "fat". i would definitely go for a custom painted lugged steel stem with polished lugs, such as llewellyn (quite pricey though):
the bottle cages and the whole groupset are quite plump too. it's the latest technology, i know, it looks great on a carbon fibre frame, but on this frame with slim steel tubes, it looks a little misplaced/overdressed.
please, do not get me wrong, it still is a fantastic bike. all its components are fantastic if you view them alone. but alltogether, i see room for making the whole build a little more harmonious (= heavier though).
anyway, enjoy your sweet ride and thanks for this great photography! and don't care too much about my personal opinion!
No worries...I honestly had the same fears going into the project...I debated a good while but in the end I wanted something modern rather than another retro build of this frame.
The custom stem is damn tempting tho...

That is hot. I have a steel master Colango team Buckler with chrome straight fork blades on the way. I was going to go totally retro with it but your bike is making me reconsider.

I really agonized over it (I must've changes build components about 100x) but in the end I wanted to try and pull off a modern steel build...I was nervous right up till yesterday tho.

16.5 eh??
That's awesome!!!
I'd love to do a steel build myself - and if I could get it sub 8.5kg (19ish lbs) then I would be wrapt. Maybe 8kg's is possible now that I've seen yours! (as I won't be using SR on mine - rather Athena looks like the go).

I'm hoping to see some steel + Athena builds in the coming months...I'd really like to see some Master Molteni builds. I almost went with Molteni...

Charles very classy build, makes me almost want to strip the components off of my 1985 Pinarello Montello (SLX tubing) and do an Athena build, only problem being of course that I'll have a really nice 1983 Super Record gruppo and 50th Anniversary wheels laying around.
