Been following the forum for a bit now, and my bike finally got here a week ago. Not the lightest, but it's a start. Standard R700 with LOOK A5.1 pedals, and Cateye Astrale 8

The reflectors are coming off! Don't know why I havn't already. The bag and lights are on part time only. Just when I know I'm going to be riding at night.

Obviously you don't see them on pro bikes or race-day machines but for bikes that we use for every day rural rides you need a blow-out bag. I've seen some guys put their gear in a Zip-lock bag in their jersey pocket. This bothers me. I don't like to have additional weight on my body. I'd rather carry it on my bike. You'd be surprised how many pros I've seen training with saddle bags, including when I was in Spain. As stated around here before, it's the non-pros that are more hung up on this crap. When you're going to be out for an 8 hour ride in Spring and the weather could change, those pockets are stuffed with clothing and food, and your tube and pump are in your bag and on your frame.
edited to add: I'm with ya doc. Between our roads, broken glass, and riding up into the mountains, my tools etc are on the bike, not me.

Due to the critisism and conflict my last post received, I am posting again, the proud father of a R700.
After putting some miles on, the brakes and seat are going to be the first to go. I'm going to shoot for all Ultegra 6600. DA too expensive for my chef's salary.

Nothing wrong with ultegra. Just ride.
As for a saddle bag, on our team rides. we won't help anyone on the road if they didn't even attempt to bring their own spares and/or equipment to at least try to fix whatever. if someone shows for a ride with no gears to fix things, we warn them about our rules. of course we help everyone, if they at least brought something like a spare tube.
