Hello forum!
I'm new user here from Indonesia. Just started cycling since last year and want to share my budget bike. Bought this bike for just around $750 (around IDR 11mio). I always wondering why old Supersix Evo and CAAD12 (also previous CAAD model) so light even have similar looks. Comparing my bike, CAAD Optimo 2019 105, with almost the same spec as entry level CAAD12, the differences is about 1-1.5 kg :noidea:

Image
first time I got my bike, i believe it was around 9.4 kg with pedal.
I've been change some parts since last year, but lately i contacted my friend to help me to disassemble all the parts. Now, i know where the weight comes from

Naked Frame
IMG_20210912_154650.jpg
I'll start with everything not changed

Frame :
Cannondale Optimo 2019 Grey 51 - 1685 grams (with RD hanger)
IMG_20210912_170011.jpg
Aluminium tube is much thicker than what CAAD12 has. I feel more weight on the rear triangle than on the front. This weight almost same as high end steel frame

Fork :
Cannondale Stock, cut - 360 grams
IMG_20210912_170826.jpg
After weighing the fork, i thought it'll be okay if cut 2cm more. Minus around 5 grams. Carbon fork at this weight i guess it's normal.

Seatclamp :
Cannondale Stock, alloy - 25 grams
IMG_20210912_181259.jpg

Headset and Cup :
Tange Seiki - 95 grams
IMG_20210912_172957.jpg
IMG_20210912_173525.jpg
Bearings weight are normal. I can't find any 15mm or 5mm cup while rebuilding it. Just stick with 25mm cup.

Bottom Bracket :
FSA Megaexo - 90 grams
IMG_20210912_171917.jpg
IMG_20210912_171948.jpg
This frame is come with BSA instead of BB30/PF30, this system adds more weight i guess

to be continue in the comment section

or jump to Conclusion

Crankset :
FSA Gossamer 170mm 50/34 - 745 grams
FSA Gossamer.png
It felt so heavy at the beginning, it's solid alloy. I thought will be around 800grams. But turn out to be fair. Almost same as 105 R7000

Rear Derailleur :
105 R7000, new pulley - 230 grams
IMG_20210912_175334.jpg
Buy cheap chinese alloy cnc pulley, 11 & 13T, change the bearing to EZO 6892RS

Front Derailleur :
105 R7000 Clamp - 115 grams
FD Clamp.png

Shifters :
105 R7000 - 495 grams
Shifters 105.png

Cassete :
105 R7000 11-30 - 304 grams
Didn't detach from the wheelset, sorry

Chain :
KMC X11SL - 220 grams
IMG_20210913_191209.jpg
I don't know why this cheap bike come with this chain, it's lighter than HG601

Nut Top Cap :
FSA SI - 40 grams
IMG_20210912_174143.jpg

Cable Guide :
Cannondale stock - 25 grams
IMG_20210912_175152.jpg
some changes will be on next post

Changed Items

Handlebar :
old Cannondale C3 40cm - 365 grams
new OG Evkin HB010 40cm - 200 grams
IMG_20210913_192026.jpg
no problem with old HB, want to try carbon bars. For $45 from aliexpress, build quality is good, not too thin

Stem :
old Cannondale C3 9cm 6deg - 135 grams
new OEM Alloy 9cm 17deg - 100 grams
IMG_20210913_191335.jpg
just want to match top tube angle, go to 17 degree even it's not slammed

Saddle :
old Cannondale Selle Royale - 300 grams
new Elita One Carbon saddle - 120 grams
imgonline-com-ua-twotoone-7Lv6M0tjZsrP.jpg
finally i know CAAD12 comes with Prologo, or even older CAAD comes with Fabric saddle. Damn heavy

Seatpost :
old Cannondale C3 27.2 - 315 grams
new Elita One Carbon 27.2 - 135 grams
imgonline-com-ua-twotoone-wCMcG4ZLfQ.jpg
still can't believe new saddle and seatpost combined is lighter than old saddle. Maybe these Elita One not as good as Hylix, but it's quite good imo

Wheelset :
old Maddux RS2.0 - around 2050 grams
new Superteam 45mm Hubsmith - 1586 grams
imgonline-com-ua-twotoone-Rb8qwoRpG855JX.jpg
Maddux quite heavy, change to custom wheels. Not a lightweight carbon wheelset, but reliable enough

Tires :
old Zaffiro Pro Slick - around 740 grams / pair
new Continental Ultra Sport 3 - 540 grams / pair

Tubes :
old Kenda - 250 grams / pair
new Conti Tubes - 210 grams / pair

Bartape and End Plugs :
old Cannondale stock - 120 grams
new OG Evkin - 105 grams

Cables & Housing :
old Shimano - 100 grams
new Jagwire - 65 grams

Skewer :
old Maddux - 100 grams
new Risk Ti Carbon - 40 grams
Skewers.png
Brakes :
old Tektro R741 - 320 grams
new 105 R7000 - 385 grams
imgonline-com-ua-twotoone-f8R7GBiuNO.jpg
the only upgrade that add weight  , old Tektro has bad braking power, so scary to put it alongside carbon wheels without braking groove

Bottlecage
Bontrager ACM - 60 grams / pair (with steel bolts)

Pedal
Look Keo 2 Max - 270 grams / pair

This is timely; I just grabbed a 2018 Optimo locally and my 58cm bike weighed almost 10kg with pedals. I was wondering as well where all the weight was coming from, that is indeed one heavy frame!

Conclusion

Bike Final Weight : 8.225 grams
almost same as weight summary sheet
Weight Summary.png
Verdict
-
  • Second grade C2 Alloy frame weigh a lot, no matter how you change the parts, it's still heavy. 600grams to CAAD12, 800 grams to S6Evo
  • BSA Bottom Bracket system add more weight, but still reliable
  • It's no point to change crankset in this current setup
  • If I swap frame to CAAD12 or Supersix Evo, I should change many parts. Brake, FD, BB, Crankset, Seatpost
+
  • So happy with the result, manage to sub 8 kg without pedals. Will change tubes and tires later to make it sub 8 kg full bike
  • My friend (@mokocyclingshed on Instagram) did a beautiful front wiring
  • Definitely more than enough for my first bike, time to build more power
These weight might be not accurate, should use proper scales next time, Park Tool or othe table scale
Hope this thread would gave enough information for other newbies in building their first bike.
I'm sorry for my bad english.
Thank you

You sure did transfer this bike from a stock looking Optimo to a fast looking Optimo!

Can you run a HG SI 30mm crankset by adjusting the BB? Like this: https://r2-bike.com/ROTOR-Bottom-Bracket-BB30-BSA

Than you could save some weight there. Mine comes in at 566gr with Cannondale spider and TA Syrius chainrings in 48/34.

That's a porky frame! I was quoted 1.64kg (for a 54) from Cannondale when I was considering one for a build a few years ago, and 672g for the uncut fork. I understood that the disc frame was significantly lighter (due to pressfit bb). What's the real-world weight of a CAAD12/13?

Fow what it's worth, it might be quite a bit of weight in the paint (but its hard to know without removing it)

Thanks mate!
Really need upgrade my leg power to make this bike really fast Image

Sure i've considered this option too! But idk, online reviewer still 50:50 about this. Theoretically yes, it can fit. But some said many technical issue would happen like you can't fit the crank with enough torque because not enough space and chainring will too close to the frame and sometimes chain will rub.

I'm doing this just for my curiosity Image. Would never recommend anyone to build a 'serious' bike with this frame, just for entry level build.
Yeah i've read it too. The funny thing, disc version will cut some weight with the different drivetrain. Maybe just in this frame , rim and disc version will have almost similar full bike weight build

Sadly have to add some weight, change the seatpost from 0 setback to 20mm because fitting report said so. Adding around 25 grams :(ImageImage

I like this thread. Few comments,
IMHO : Elita-One > Hylix
Cassette, crankset and brake calipers can be massively reduced in weight. Brakes can be pricey, but cassette and cranksets are low hanging fruits. Zzto cassette and fsa kforce light (using the same BB) can save you 120 and 200g respectively, you'd be sub-8kg

Thank you Image
Elita One had robust quality for general diameter, but Hylix is the only option for cheap proprietary seatpost

I thought about it too haha, changing tires to GP5000 and tubes to latex almost make it sub 8 kilos. But then i thought it's useless to build light bike with this heavy frame. My next plan to swap this frame to Old Supersix Evo (hope it'll be HM), save 1 kg only on frame Image

Haha, there you go! Don't sell that frame cheap though, there's a lot of demand for caads. I would advise to wait until crit season starts next year if you can't find a buyer at a good price. Caads and Allez are always are sought-after commodity in March/April!
