Schmolke KOM - sub (6) 5 kg
Moderators: MrCurrieinahurry, maxim809, Moderator Team
First - some background
After a few years of absence due to divorce and problems associated with it - i returned to the Polish roads and decided to replace the old Look 566 with something lighter. Of course, the Look with its weight of around 6.5 kg with Lightweight gen 3 wheels was not that heavy, but it can always be lighter.
I wanted it to easily withstand conditions of everyday use (including commuting to work). From the very beginning I knew that in order to get the weight down to around 5+ kg it would be necessary to use a frame as light as possible in combination with a mechanical groupset and rim brakes. I started my search with the frame - and then came an opportunity to buy the unused Schmolke KOM frame, the catalog weight of which is 795 grams.
Unfortunately, there is no rose without thorns as they say - and the bargain price was paid for with a scratched paint coating on the downtube. Since the project assumed the possibility of individual painting of the frame from the very beginning, it was not a problem for me. The existing paintjob was sanded down, the frame was cleaned and degreased, and then, using acrylic paint, the motives related to my favorite music band - Behemoth were painted. Then she was sent to the car painting workshop and copvered with 3 layers of clear coat. First two with mica and the last was ment to be hard and protective. The weight grown to 815 gram and it was jus ta begining ...

That is just beautiful. Love the rims and tyre combo too - I need to replace my 'aero' wheels, those would be perfect for my frame.

I thought I know lots about ww frames but this is the first time I've heard of this! Great customisation with the paint job, not my cup of tea but it's tastefully done. The 10 speed sram red groupset, bolt on skewers and bar tape hack makes it a classic ww build How does those brakes work for you? I used them as my first pair of brakes for my previous light build and had a scary time braking with them even at 70kg. But maybe it was because I was using powercordz/Corima cork pads with them and that sapped braking power.
The brakes work resonably good with swiss stop flash evo pads. They are not as strong as shimano but i still feel confident with them on the climbs i have around (biggest one is 1300 m elev gain).Kayrehn wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 5:38 pmHow does those brakes work for you? The red gruppo is temporary until it wears out same as the crankset. This one will go to my Tt bike and i have already ordered clavicula se (due to problems with buying another pair of skypivot one) with pm and extralite rings wich shall shave another 100g

how do you like the crankset? how long have you had it and where did you source it from? bike looks great and agree with kay on the brakes but i am over 90kg
I find it wery good, lateral stifness is far better than rotor24 i had on my previous bike, I have them since beggining of the year - iam doing weekly approx 300-500 km since end of april and it works flawlessly. the rings are true and dont have much wear.Didnt had any problems with axo powermeter too. for sure if the possibility arise i will buy another one for my CX bike. I bought the crankset trough my gf friend in china.liketoride wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 1:28 pmhow do you like the crankset? how long have you had it and where did you source it from? bike looks great and agree with kay on the brakes but i am over 90kg
