I have always wanted a custom steel frame so after many years of dreaming I finally pulled the trigger on a Baum Ristretto. I have been eagerly waiting for a while now but as I am getting close to the end of my journey I thought I would take a few minutes to share. After a few conversations over the phone I made a trip to the Baum factory where I had an amazing day. Ryan had a look at me on my existing bike, Cervelo R3, and set up their fit bike to match my existing bike for a reference. I spent some time pedaling at several different wattages while we chatted about my likes / dislikes of my current bike, how I would like the new bike to handle, al lots of chit chat about cycling and bike stuff in general. All the time he was tweaking my position and looking at the real time efficiency of my pedaling combined with my overall position. That was enough to work out my contact points. After a shower and a tour of the factory we chatted more about the way I want the bike to handle and the type of riding I do, from that Ryan worked out the geometry chart for my new baby. Then it was onto colour, not my strong suit but with a bit of hand holding we came up with a scheme I was really pleased with.

Here is the fit bike, with my saddle installed. We tried different crank lengths, pedal axle widths, handle bar width and shape.

So many colours to choose from!

Let the build begin! It will be standard rim brake, mechanical group, external cable route, threaded BB. Lots of Chris King and some ENVE tossed in for good measure.

Tubes are selected and cut to length, Columbus Xcr stainless rear triangle with custom Dedacciai main triangle.

Mitre cut and in the jig

Darren working his magic. The frame is purged with argon and the tubes are carefully TIG welded together.

After welding the frame gets dipped into a series of anti corrosion tanks before going to paint.

Some base paint after the primer.

More paint and clear coat, with the frame being baked between coats.
