Here’s the new project. I got a little too antsy and didn’t weigh the bike out of the box but my end goal is 7.4kg or less. The frame is a 56cm and my plans are basically to replace everything but the frame. I’ve got a DA9170 upgrade kit in the mail, a nice set of DT Swiss PRC 1400 65mm wheels with a DA 12-28 cassette/Conti 5000 clinchers with latex tubes ready to mount, and a set of J+L axles to keep me happy for now. I’ll most likely end up with a one piece barstem and switch to the bar end junction box then.

Here’s a picture of the initial setup. Just starting to get the fitting at this point. I’ll end up with a 5mm soccer above and below the stem (getting cut shortly) and also switch to the zero setback seat post.

So since I got a little too anxious to tear into the bike and didn’t weigh all the parts I’ve swapped, I basically had to find the manufacturer listed weights or information from other sites such as Competion Cycle but I’ve got a good idea of the weight I’ve dropped. Here’s the list of parts swapped and weights so far.

Wheels weighed fully assembled as pictured

Front dt- 1190g Enve 1145
Rear dt- 1520g Enve 1560

DT Swiss PRC 1400 65mm wheels equipped with Conti 5000 CL 23F/25R, Vitoria latex tubes, DA 9000 12/28 cassette, 140mm Shimano RT-98 rotors

BR-RS805 caliper 164 ea
Dura-Ace caliper 124g ea
-40g

Oem axle F 61g/R 73g
J+L axle F 20g / R 26g
-88g

ST-R785 lever 250g ea
DA 9170 lever 180g ea
-140g

R Derailleur Ultegra 6800 254g
DA 196g
-72g

F Derailiuer Ultegra 6800 138g
DA 111g
-27g

Pro Sport Control bar tape 44g per roll
Cinelli Cork bar tape 24g per roll
-40g

Selle San Marco Aspide FX Carbon saddle 145g

Carbon Works bottle cage with bolts 9g x 2

Favero Assioma Uno pedals 283g

The bike now tips the scales at 7665g with pedals, cages, and garmin stem mount (Cervelo barfly mount is 50g and mounts it above the bar anyway)which is 150g more than I was hoping for. I’ll swap the bars and stem out in the future for a 100g savings, hopefully, and possibly the outer chainring to a carbon-ti or similar to find the last few grams. The steer tube also needs to be cut and I’ll be switching to the 0mm offset seat post so maybe those two things will get me a bit lower than my goal.

I’ll get some better outdoor pictures hopefully this week but here’s a quick excited dining room shot.

Stem gets cut next week. I’m thinking I’ll leave enough for 15mm of spacers. I feel comfortable with it slammed and I haven’t ridden much over the winter but I’d like to be able to sell it if I wanted to. Might end up with 5mm under it but we’ll see.

So far with the little bit I’ve ridden it, the front feels high compared to my propel and the reach is much better. I went down a size so the reach was to be expected. The DA hoods are light years better than the original ST-R785 ones. It took a few good hard stops to get the brake pads bedded in but the disc brakes feel like I remember, smooth feeling levers (no cable/housing rub) but they didn’t blow my mind compared to my propels rim brakes. The updated buttons are a bit of an improvement over the 9070 but again not mind blowing. Having the BT setup so I can see what gear I’m in on my garmin is actually REALLY good! I don’t need to look down or count my changes to prevent cross chaining. I don’t have enough seat time on it yet to say how I like the ride but it feels quite comparable to the propel and it definitely isn’t giving anything up to it.

A few more pictures. Once the stem is cut I’ll get some proper ones.

Nice build. Any plans to relocate the Garmin after steerer has been cut?

Absolutely. I don’t like it where it is at all but the 50g barfly mount puts it above the bar and it’s made of lead. I’m looking into finding an out front stem mount but it needs to be extra long to fit in front of the funky shaped bar.

That’s it for now. Weight hasn’t changed much. I ended up using the barfly mount for my gps but I cut the back of it out shaving 10g and switched to a wahoo which is also lighter than the edge 510. With it mounted on the stem it was a bit hard to see and I had to look down too far so this puts it in a better position.

The tires measure 24.5mm (23) on the front and 26mm (25) on the rear with the 18mm internal width rim.

It feels fast and comfortable. I’m really happy with the switch from my Propel and i hope I’ll be able to log plenty of miles on it this summer.

You should put on a set oa DA Icetech rotors. the Black inner disk would rock with your colourway :)

I agree but I thought they might be more susceptible to cross winds and.....they’re heavier lol.

I've got the same bike just a few sizes smaller and in the red. I've been considering upgrading the shifters to R8070 STIs. Given that the 9170s are supposed to be much the same in dimension to the r8070s did you notice any difference in terms of reach dimensions from the R785s?

Yes absolutely! I’d equate it to going down 10mm on your stem size.

Thank you!

When I was out for a ride with my wife yesterday I had to take a pit stop in a bush and had her hold the bike. As I was walking back and finally saw it from a bit of a distance I couldn’t help but have a big grin on my face and say “damn that’s a sexy bike!” She then told me that I’m an idiot and that I damn well better like it lol.
