Is the hsimano type freehub lighter than the Campagnolo type?
Is a Sram Red cassette lighter than a Super Record? 'edit' you are probably right. A Super -Recor dis listed at 188gr on the Ca website

So I imagine that the newer alloy Shimano freehub is around the same weight as the campy one, but the sram cassette represents a major weight saving.. Thing is, coming from 52/36 12-27 I’d probably want to switch to full compact rings in the absence of 12 tooth smallest sprockets with sram, so 50/34 11-26. Which would save a few more grams of course.. But bigger rings look better.... :). Decisions...

Yeah, a real shame about Ronde, just closed in the last few weeks.. The Ronde club is still going I think, meeting at Gamma cycles now..

Quite a few of us from Ediburgh it seems!

I'm only just up the road from Ronde and I saw it closed as well :( It was a nice shop but I suppose they just couldn't keep going on coffee and cake.

Has Gamma moved? Last time I saw the place it looked like it had become a furniture shop :noidea:

Yes, Gamma has moved round the corner - now in a converted garage at the top of Comley Bank Row. Presumably vastly cheaper rent than a prime spot in Stockbridge..

My 11/28 Red cassette is only 165g. 11/25-11/26 are less than 10g savings if memory serves.

Edit: I'm also no Campy expert but the earlier comment about freehub on One vs Ultra level sounds correct to me. I believe the One series has a steel freehub and Ultra has alloy. Entertainingly, that is the large majority of the weight difference between the two series.

Is that 10 speed? Or do you mean 11/27 or 11/29? I thought there were only 23, 25, 27 and 29 biggest-tooth options in 11 speed Campagnolo.

I always assumed that the weight difference between One & Ultra was the alloy vs. carbon hubs. I need to take the cassette of my Bora One to check.. ;-) I'd be surprised if the freehub was steel however, as the actual measured weight differences between One and Ultra are very small. Might have been the case in the past however?

I've always avoided SR cassettes because I've assumed that the Ti sprockets would wear pretty quickly, and they are very expensive.. With Record it's only the biggest three cogs that are Ti and I generally avoid using them unnecessarily. It'll always be the first Ti sprocket that wears out first though (the 23 in my case with a 12-27 cassette), as I'm more likely to drift onto that one without shifting to the small chainring..

Looking at the SRAM XG-1190, all of the cogs are steel except the largest one, which is heat treated alu.. I imagine that would wear even quicker than Ti, but it would be very rarely used. So I guess the SRAM cassettes would last considerably longer than SR?

I'm also liking the look of the ratios on the SRAM 11-26 (11,12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,26). Only one tooth jumps between the first 7 sprockets, whereas with my Campy 12-27 (12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25,27) only the first 6 sprockets have one tooth jumps. The tradeoff is a three tooth jump to the last sprocket on the SRAM, but as that's the bail-out climbing gear it's not an issue really..

Hmm...

And the SRAM setup will be much lighter - from my research, about 155-160g (?) for the 11-26 cassette, a 70g saving over my current setup (and about 45g over a SR 12-27), plus a few grams for the lighter 34/50 chainrings over the 36/50.

So the Campag for Campag cassette fitted on my Bora Ones was alloy - it's actually lighter than the Campag for Shimano one, but only by 3g.. ;-)

SRAM Red 11-26 cassette saves a massive 78g over the Campagnolo Record 12-27 though! (both with lockrings).

So a net saving of 75g. And I've replaced the 52-36 rings with 50-34, which saves a further 18g.

=> Bike is now 93g lighter, dead on 5.9kg without computer (and even with the computer still comfortably sub-6kg, so I'm happy). :D

Unfortunately yes. Currently the sram cassette isn't shifting particularly well, although I'm working on that.. :D

Lately the shifting hasn't been perfect on this bike even with the Campagnolo cassette (nothing to do with the frame as it was better a few months ago). The SRAM cassette has made it worse, although think it's more of a symptom than a cause. It might be as much to do with the combination of a slightly (although well within specs) worn Campagnolo chain and a brand new SRAM cassette as anything else.

Have replaced the cables, thoroughly cleaned the mech and am going to try it with a new SRAM red chain as well as some new Campagnolo RD-RE900 jockey wheels (the ones that come with the HO mechs). I'll report back..
