50 or 52 with an 11/32 or 11/28
You don't want a 44x11.

Will it be possible to climb on a 50x32? Not a short hill effort but a long sustained 1.5 hour climb where I can maintain a 90 plus rpm? I need to look at the gear calculator because I am confused. They sell the 3T Strada at TriStore with a 50 front and 11-36 cassette. I don't see how it is possible to do a long sustained climb on that :|

On the 3T Strada Review, they say a 48 tooth front ring mated to an 11-40 cassette is about the same as a 52/36 on an 11-28 cassette.

This lady said this:

The hot talking point within amateur and professional ranks alike, this bike attracted more crowds than a puppy, with everyone talking about the 1x drivetrain. (To its credit it was really nice to not have to even consider shifting with my left hand.)

But on the downside, the 50x36 gearing was way too big for the 18-20% gradients on the Strade Bianche. Even as a super rigid bike, there was a lot of out-of-saddle climbing, which took its toll over the four hours of riding. If you're buying this bike, you'll have to make sure you're very au fait with knowing which gears for which ride, and switching them out. On the descents and flat I had no issues and sped along blissfully.

Depends if you're a spinner or a grinder.

I don't currently do any group rides, so haven't been in a paceline in a while. So take the following with those impressions in mind.

My 1x is a 42 up front currently. My typical cadence is around 70-90 on the tops, and 90-115 while putting power down in the drops.
At the other end, I ran a compact (50/36) on an 11-26 cassette. In the granny gear, on super steep stuff I'd go as low as 50 or so on cadence. I haven't done any real climbs yet on the 1x, so can't really comment on that. Here's some rough numbers showing speed.

42t up front:
50RPM x 32 teeth: ~5.1 MPH
90 RPM x 11 teeth: ~27 MPH
110 RPM x 11 teeth: ~33MPH

36t up front:
50 PM x 26 teeth: ~5.4 MPH

44t up front:
50RPM x 32 teeth: ~5.4 MPH
110 RPM x 11 teeth: ~34.5 MPH

I wouldn't do a 50, unless you have no steep gradients. A 50x36 is a harder gear than a 36x26. And I ran a 26 max rear cassette because it's relatively flat here; hardly any climbs longer than a couple football fields. False flats all over, and short and steep stuff, but no 1km+ climbs. I'd have gone to an 11-28 for any mountain rides.

So, if you're a spinner, you can likely do a paceline at 30 MPH on a 44. It has OK gearing for climbing, depending on gradients, depending on comfortable cadence. I wouldn't be on the front for pacing on a downhill though, as spinning out likely at 35+ MPH.

Sure it is possible, but regardless of whether you are racing or just riding, it is not a good idea.

11x 11-36 cassettes are boat anchors.

The light cassettes are the 3t and XX1 ones, but you need and XD freehub for those. The 9-32 3t cassette (216g) would be perfect for you application. I'm running one with 38, 40 and 42 rings for road-only use, and I switch to a 10-42 for allroad / gravel.

You can run the 3t with a Wifli derailleur but you only need a short cage for 1x :D

You'll need a Force1 derailleur for 11-36 or 10-42, and these are 250g.

Edco makes a CNC 11 spd cassette that is pretty light...one piece similar to SRAM Red.
- Factor Ostro VAM Disc
- Factor LS Disc
- Specialized Aethos Disc
- Sturdy Ti Allroad Disc
- Guru Praemio R Disc

But not in useful ratios.

@rlpaul - thank you sir. That was the information I was looking for. I am not a low cadence grinder and I do not live in a flat area. The Carbontactic stuff is not available yet so I will probably order a Fibrelyte 44 tooth to start and maybe have a 48-50 tooth on the side if I find I spin out on the flats and descents.

@marin - the XD style freehubs will make all my wheels obsolete :( I was interested in the 3T cassette but did not know it will not work on a standard splined Shimano free hub. I want to start with an 11-36 cassette and Recon makes a 210 gram titanium version. They also have a 150 gram Aluminum version which will not last very long. I may just get the titanium.

There may be good reasons for 1x, but from what I can tell going 1x in the hope of saving weight isn't one of them. Seems like the extra weight of the dinner plate cassettes required meets or exceeds the other weight savings.

I'm not a fan of 1x, but don't want to start that debate again again...

@Gearjunkie - I agree with you on 1x not saving weight. With careful parts selection one may be able to match the weight of 2x at best. For the SRAM Etap to work I would need a derailleur extender like the Wolftooth Roadlink which will add even more weight. This pink Chinese knockoff weighs 12 grams. I will need this to comfortably clear 36 or more teeth with Etap and Ridea Oversized cage.

Won't you be using Lightweights? IIRC they have DT Swiss freehubs and should thus take a DT XD driver.

Is the Recon 11-36 an 11 speed?
If you are running 10x you can use the top-end 1-piece Sram MTB cassettes which are quite light as well.

Fyi, the 3t 9t cassette/freehub system is being cited as the reason for aqua blues mechanical woes.

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
