I began researching aftermarket ultralight “schmolke” style seatmast caps in the 135mm range and came up with nothing initially. I went to eBay and ordered a Hylix post and a donor seatmast cap thinking this would be a great opportunity to make the bike a true weight weenie. If successfull I hope for it to look like it could have come from Trek but in the 70- 80 gram range. fast-forward a few weeks after waiting on parts from China and more internet searching later I realized there were 2 weight weenie options out there that I could find POP and Smud. I exchanged emails with Piotr at Smud and am going to have him make me a 135mm 5mm set-back cap because I am not entirely confident I will be successful or that it will be “safe”. But here is what I have so far:
I plan to use the carbon Hylix post itself to practice drilling the holes for the yolk and cradle before doing it on the Trek part.
Here are all the ingredients, I hope to start practicing drilling posts this weekend, any advice is appreciated. I have ordered a set of “diamond coated” hole saws including a 10mm(yolk) and a 32mm (cradle) but other than that I am figuring it out as I go.
By my estimate Darimo hardware would be roughly 35-37 grams. if I am ultimately successfull with this project I will order the Darimo hardware and will probably make another. This will do for now, I am fairly pleased with the weight but the clamp will see some sanding to be as carbon rail friendly as possible.

I am actually shocked at how low that 42X90 is...Tacomajack wrote: ↑Thu Mar 15, 2018 3:06 amUncut fork and cane creek 40 series, weight is not bad for what it is. Handlebar is 42x90, that weight I am very impressed with5AC6F2BA-E42B-4AAE-86D6-66B0E7BDD4F1.jpeg
