Cryptic cycles

Ok so I can finally post about this bike. Shimano commissioned me to build this frame for their new Metrea City group. They opened a pop up shop in the Soho arts district in New York City for the summer and the bike is on display there. The theme for the paint was based on this and features the New York skyline on the top tube as well as a map of the Manhattan zip codes on the downtube. It's a black base coat with a slight pearl sprayed on top that shifts from black to purple depending on the light. Typing this in the back of a taxi so excuse any typos.

So Photobucket has decided to screw a bunch of users without any warning wanting to charge $400 a year to host images on third party sites. As a result all of my images have been replaced with an annoying upgrade picture. Im working to move all images over to flickr now.

Yea many threads are missing photos now, including mine, this really sucks and I wonder how many great photos will be lost forever now.

Why are you going with flickr, they could do the same, what other good options are there ???

So here is the first sample of the honeycomb tubing im working on. This is molded in the 1.75" external diamater that I use for down tubes. I did a small sample size to prove the technique and a full tube is next. This is done using only Uni directional carbon and the results from this small test are very promising.

That's similar to what frm did on the black hole line 10 years ago (but not in uni if my memory is correct). Never understood what the problem was to stop their ambitious set of products (including the stem than I am not even sure got commercialised).
Very interested in you feedback!

I'm not sure exactly what caused them to stop making the honeycomb bikes but I will say that it is much more work, cost 2-3 times as much in material and I can see them having some impact resistance problems with the way they were making it. With only 1-2 layers of woven as the outer skin it wouldn't take much to puncture it. I'm using a very light weight 80 gsm uni that allows me to work in the different fiber angles needed to balance bending, torsional and impact loads a down tube may experience without adding too much weight. This fabric is half the weight of a standard uni allowing twice the amount of layers in the same weight. Once again that makes it much more labor intensive because you have to cut and lay up double the material but it results in a better product.

It's been said already, but much respect for the work you're doing. Really pushing the envelope with this design. Could it work for a whole frame? Better weights realistically achievable?

It's still early to say but it's not something that I will be using through the whole frame. If anything it would be probably top and down tubes. Downtube is where I'll be starting and working from there. As far as weight I don't see it coming down much at all. You are taking layers away but adding the core so it's going to be a minimal weight savings. The biggest thing I'm hoping to see is stiffness greatly increase and vibrations cut way down. This is a big bonus with core materials.

Could you build a head hube out of it to bond to the down tube? Should create something ridiculously stiff
