My family loves bikes and biking. We don't do video games or a lot of expensive toys. Bikes are a fun, healthy way for us to entertain ourselves, get around, and just spend time together. 90% of the time, I don't even drive a car.

My son knows that these bikes aren't toys to be left in the yard. He treats his bikes with a lot of care. Plus, I really enjoy building them up. So, it's a worthwhile investment. As long as he is interested and motivated I'll try and give him the best bikes I can afford.

But, also, a bit easier for smaller hands to manage... closer to the rim, which has disadvantages, but better stopping power with a shorter pull of the lever.

Having them on hand is a perfectly good reason. I also feel that they make for a better option if your son wants his bike to double as a road option in the summer. Just toss some slick 700x25's on her and go.
