For your budget I'd take a Canyon 29er hard tail. Unless you can get another good deal. You'll want to upgrade the wheels on a bike at that price point, so make sure to set aside some cash for that.

I've read some worring stuff about the leftys forks (they area really hard to service, they do break and the proprrietary hub issue, for example). That worried me quite a lot. Do you have one? Have you ever had any prroblems?

Eh. Canyon don't use Lefty forks. That would be Cannondale :) I've been really happy with my fork so far.

I wouldn't look at Cannondale with your budget. That's why I mentioned Canyon.

Yes, the direct sales ONLY business model keeps prices down, they do however have a UK based rep for dealing direct on warranty issues etc.
