I'll assume you mean slick tyres as fitting 700c road tyres to a 26" rim just won't work.

Slicks are fine for commuting and even riding the odd canal footpath but are definitely a no-go as far as proper off-roading is concerned. As soon as you touch water, roots, mud or any number of trail debris you'll be off you bike before you can say "not worth it after all".

...I'm sure it would speed up your reactions though.
.....but it still has to work!

I would DEFINITELY use road bike tires on my mtb !!

If:

1- I was hoping to inflict pain upon my own body
2- I did not want to have my thumbs un-broken any longer
3- the thought of making any turns without bruising myself was unbearable
4- I felt like walking mybike half the time rather than riding
5- I found a mechanic that could make 700c tires fit on 26" wheels
