Looking to dabble in xc and looking for a hardtail.

Question is do I start with an off the peg bike or build from frame up? And if so what frame would you start from with a budget of around £2k for the full build?

I've looked at the bmc two-stroke 01 five and have the potential for using my enve tubular wheels on dt 240 hubs for racing if necessary.

My thoughts were if I could start with a frame at £400ish then sid forks and hunt alloy wheels that would give a lighter build than the bmc but almost definitely a worse frame.

I'm coming from a 10 year old 26 inch giant xtc so anything would be an upgrade
