Light, Durable ~30mm inner rims?
Moderator: Moderator Team
I’m currently looking to get a second set of wheels built up for what I’ll call supported mountain bike touring. Basically, doing long ~40 mile point to point training rides, from campground to campground, in CO. Meeting my wife and child and letting my wife get some fishing or a ride of her own in.
My current wheel set is a set of WeAreOne Revive rims on DT 240s. 1340g for the set. They are 25mm inner, but I find myself looking for wider rims to support a nice fat 2.4” tire.
I’m wanting set of wide, light AND durable ~30mm rims. Something that won’t let me down when I’m 20 miles from the nearest road at 11,000ft.
So far, I’ve found:
1) Duke Crazy Jack SLS2 (410g) €342.
2) MCFK 30mm inner (375g) €579.
I’ve also found the Newmen Advanced SL X.A.30, but at 355g, that might be a bit too light. And, no reviews at all. Whereas the other two are rated for AM-type riding.
Anything else I’m missing?

Might be a bit heavy at 440g +\- 15g but if you ask them to select the lightest they have it’ll be closer to 425g than 440g. AM rated. Buy from North American site if you go this route.

Will you go with Berd spokes for these ?
On another thread you sparked me on them and now I want to try.

Should build up to a ~1330g wheel set if I go with something relatively standard on the hubs. I.e., 240s.
One thing I’m torn on is going with a super light front or a heavier hub with better geometry.

The Newmen FADE front hubs are pretty interesting. Get even spoke tension with a ~3mm asymmetric rim.
I’m going to run a bunch of hub dimensions through some calculators to see what gets the best combination of light hub AND balanced tension.

Thanks for the info. Newmen hubs looks very good indeed: even tension, light, 10º engagement, sober look.
But no much long term feedback.
For what it's worth their stem is well made, very light for a good price
I'm afraid the white strings won't stay white for long.
Do you know if the black ones stay black ?

They use small bits of strings instead of the stainless steel Tangential Straightpull Inserts available under their Accessories.
Do you plan to use these ?
Roval Control240 as on the Stumpjumper S-Works maybe? 363g and really good. I use them on my Epic Evo with XTR hubs, awesome rims.

You use the short bits of Dyneema for j-bend hubs. You use Dyneema + steel inserts (5g per wheel) for straight pull.carbonazza wrote:Thanks for the info. Newmen hubs looks very good indeed: even tension, light, 10º engagement, sober look.

So, if a j-bend hub is 5g heavier than a SP hub, they’ll build out to roughly the same weight.

I've seen a picture of a straightpull hub laced with the bits but can't find it back.
But ok 5g...
EIE Carbon has wide, light rims too.
Might go that route.MattMay wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 4:23 pmhttps://www.lightbicycle.com/AM930-asym ... javascript

I saw on another forum that you posted about the Duke Crazy Jack rims. Did you end up buying them?
Don’t think that was me.
Has anyone seen scale shots of the 2020+ DT Swiss XRC 1200 Spline 30s with 180s?
Or the XMCs with the new 180s?
The listed weights and the weights posted on various retailer websites are all over the place.

I just ordered a set of their 27 internal 275g rims, we'll see how that goes...
