What the hell happened to these cassettes?

I bought it around 10 years ago for 35 Euros. Now, looking to replace my trusty cassette, I see that they are sold on Ebay for 100+ dollars. I understand that Shimano is no longer making them, but why? What is the closest replacement that I might be able to find?

8 speed 11-28t still is made.bits low end though for claris or something like that.
