I am a mountain biker trying to break into cyclocross racing. I can’t seem to get use to the drop road bars on my Cannondale Super X Rival, and have been running flat bars on my SS Ridley X Fire cross bike for a while, and love it.
Question: I would like to run a SRAM XX1 11 speed shifter with a SRAM Rival 11 speed derailleur. Is this something that can work, or do I need to run a MTB derailleur and cassette? Thank you in advance for any advice or information.

There are a few options out there to achieve what you're looking for but I'll just give you some better advice instead. Flat bars aren't allowed in uci cross races except the in the novice categories occasionally. If you want to races cross you just have to get used to drop bars. I think you just have to tinker with your cockpit setup and eventually learn to like drop bars.

Not sure why you’d need a road rear mech, you can use a mtb one and just have spare capacity. If you really want to do it, apparently it’s possible by swapping a few parts from each derailleur to get the right pull ratio.
