When I got a used 2016 scott spark 700 premium in the fall of 2016, i did not intend to ever end up here. I was all for saving some weight, and adding carbon... but the plan was to be economical.

That did not last long. I should note that out of the box, the bike from scott, without pedals or bottle cage was 22.9lbs or so.

First was the frame. I got it used, size small. 27.5 is kind of dead in xc, but i figured that for my size, it would be just fine, if not more ideal as i am not a powerful rider (135lbs on a good day). Plus is allowed me to get a smoking deal on a set of carbon dt swiss spline 1250xrc wheels. They were in the 1300g+ range, which was not too bad really. I slapped on a rocket ron 2.1 front, thunder burt rear... both tubeless.

The bike came with a 2x xtr groupset, but the seller sold off all that and equipped it with an old xo1 10 speed groupset, single ring. And he sold the carbon bars/post/stem and swapped for low end syncros heavy aluminum junk. Screw that. I settled with an xtr 1x groupset with xtr race brakes, ai2 disc rotors, xtr shifter and long cage derailer and e13 trs race 9-46 cassette (511% range!!! At 303g for the cassette).

For the cockpit and seat/post i started with a deda rs post and mt zoom bars (120g)... but went all out in the end with spanish hand made darimo post (85g), bars (680mm at 86g), and saevid alien saddle (82g). All beautiful stuff, and just the perfect amount of flex in the bars. The all carbon seatpost setup was also very cool,

I went with an economical but light wren aluminum stem. 90mm, -17 degrees, and 86 or so grams. I also swapped the 96g syncros lock on grips for ritchey superlogic foam grips that were about 16g all in with bar ends. Overall, the cockpit and post/saddle saved me near a pound over the original carbon stuff that came with the bike. And i am well under the 90kg rider limit for the bars and post. I also added a garmin 520 at 68g with mount. I kind of grinded my teath when the garmin 130 came in 30g lighter... but still supporting live strava segments. I may need to get one...

The bottle cage is an 11g mt zoom job... as is the bottle (~70g). As were the aluminum bolts for the cage. The seatpost clamp is mount zoom also, as it the lightweight aluminum steerer tube top cap. Sure extralite stuff was a touch lighter... but also 3-4x the price.

The front fork is the lightest out there... fox 32 sc step cast in 27.5. 100mm travel (just like nino shurter did with his 120mm travel spark 700rc). Just under 3lbs with cut steerer tube which was about 0.75lbs savings over the stock 120mm factory 32. I got the sc at a steal on jenson also (300$ or so canadian) as 27.5 for xc is dead, especially in non boost spacing. I figure it did fine for nino for years... so it would be fine for a chump like me too...

The rear axle was swapped for a mount zoom lightweight axle. The front fox maxle was light enough that a swap was not warranted (without going big bucks for a few grams saving).

Pedals were crankbrothers 11 ti. I love how easy they are to get into, and out of. Bb is raceface, and the crank is a raceface next sl g4. Chainring is a 32tooth raceface.

All in, the bike with some decorative vinyl, extensive frame protection with clear vinyl, garmin, pedals, cage and empty bottle is 19.75lbs. Or just under 9kg.

I struggle on finding more weight to save without spending big dolars on small gains from what i have on the bike. I am looking into a dt swiss rear shock (x313 carbon) that should save an estimated 100g over the fox nude. Lot of money for a small loss in weight... and possibly inferior shock. And i will probably get it!

Another area is the casette. The bike is so light, that i do not really need the huge climbing gear. I am thinking about saving 60g or so with a xx1 10-42 Casette (or x01 for the same weight, but black).

I think that is about it. I welcome feedback and ideas on further weight loss. Maybe headset bearings? I should also add that i got respectibly light gyro empire vr90 laced shoes, and a scott centric plus (ce) helmet that has mips. For size large, it is just over 300g, which is not bad.

Awesome bike! My Spark 910 is much, much heavier, but then again, 29" for XC is where it's at, right ;) A 300gr helmet seems like a good place to drop an easy 100+ grams!
Chains to the right!

XX1 cassette is about 260-265gr, so that would save you about 40gr only. And it will be a significant reduction on range, both low and high end.

Wheels are the biggest place I see to save weight. If you have deep pockets you can gain in the region of 200-300gr there.
Trickstuff Piccola brakes.
Titanium bolts throughout for shaving a few grams (not great $/gr, but not a huge cost in absolute terms).

In medium, the centric plus is 260g... but i have a big head. The only helmet that was lighter that i found was a s-works model... but there was no mips. Either way, my career depends on my brain... so i was not willing to compromise much there. :-)

The cassette swap may happen. The e13 can always go on my fat bikes (they need the speed). 10-42 is Less range (10% on the top end) but for the trails i ride, we don’t have a lot of open areas... so i think 10 will be fine. And based on the low gears i actually use, i think 42 will be fine. If i am climbing any slower i am losing anyway. ;-). If i miss the speed, i might be able to jump to a 34 chainring. (Or 32 oval... which could be lighter).

I looked at the piccola brakes on r2 bikes and that was one of the “too much money” decisions. 1000$ Canadian dolars, plus shipping, duty and tax and we are into 1200$. I was looking at a 16.8lbs used cervello bike for 1000$ even. I just can’t logic it for 64g savings vs my xtr race brakes.

Agreed on the wheels. A custom “flyweight” set of light bicycle wheels would be 1161g (vs 1375g dt swiss) for 214g savings. But that is knocking on 2000$ canadian all in.

I looked into the titanium bolts but i needed 6 bolt adaptors (uggh... but i used dt swiss which is among the lightest)... so maybe some 6 bold 240s hubs... if they make those. Xtr is all titanium, and i have aluminum bottle cage bolts, titanium on the seatpost clamp bolt, aluminum top cap bolt for the steerer tube. Not sure what the raceface next g4 uses, but that is pretty darn light, so i suspect not much can be improved there.

ich think a fully MTB under 9 kg is very good range and not easy to get it, without spending lot of money.
you can be satisfied with what you have. Sure, there are more possibilities to save few gram here and few there, but its all expensive.
maybe a XTR group with 1 x 11

and 27.5" is not dead ;)
i als also have a custom Scale 700 RC (with 6.630 g) and i am satisfied with it
here you can find my build https://weightweenies.starbike.com/foru ... 0&t=150056

i am planing to build some new 2 Bikes in the next weeks/months (i will post both here)
one Scott Scale 700 SL and Scott Spark RC 700 World Cup
yes both are 27.5 because for me fit that wheelsize
and with lot of modifications and custom parts, like custom trickstuff piccola with carbon made bracke levers or full carbon XTR derailleur etc
for sure, i am spending lot of money for the 2 customs bikes, but i like it to have custom bikes and its worth, although 27,5 ;)
