Ok I'm in the process of stripping and old bike down which has ultegra 6700 and adding these parts onto a bike with 105 5700. My first question is are these 2 group sets compatible with each other. Secondly if I were to swap the shifters over would I get away with using the same cables or is this usually a new cable job too?

Many
Thanks

I know that the 5700 shifters are not compatible with a 5600 rear derailer due to a slightly different cable pull ratio, not sure how the 6700 shifters compare. And if you are already stripping the bike diwn, why wouldnt you replace the cables anyway?

5700 and 6700 are plug and play compatible.

7900/6700/5700 all compatible one with the other. If my memory serves me correctly, there is a miniscule weight difference between the 105 & Ultegra cassettes (<10g). if saving money, look there.

"5700 and 6700 are plug and play compatible."

I've got 6700 on my road bike and it had 5700 callipers (I've now switched to 6700). The cable pull ratios are slightly different. They still work, but the modulation is better and braking is easier.

I have also switched to Swiss stop green so the comparison may not be fair. But I've moved the 105's onto my daily fixed gear which has tektro single speed leavers and the braking is better than on my road bike... so that plus Internet posts is enough to convince me it was a good choice.

^ EDIT: than it was when they were on my road bike.

That's just not the case - 5700 & 6700 brakes have exactly the same pull ratio.

The Shimano compatiblity documentation shows that 5700 & 6700 are 100% compatible: http://www.shimano.com.au/publish/conte ... le.html/01)%20Drivetrain%20Compatability%20Chart.pdf

Any difference you were feeling is likely to be down to different brake pads and/or adjustment.

+1 what Nickl said.
Also, 5600 and 5700 rear derailleurs/shifters are 100% compatible as well

+1 6700 completely compatible. I've been collecting some 6700 to replace 105 stuff as I get motivated to. So far only been cassette lol, but my bike shipped with a Tiagra cassette so upping that to 6700 made worlds of difference

Hi All - hoping you can help me confirm the above for 7900/6700/5700 shifters and derailleurs. I am building up a cross/winter bike and have the chance to buy some 5700 shifters and 7900 derailleurs cheap. I assume they would work but the shimano compatibility chart seems to complicate things a bit. Isn't all 10 speed (shimano or sram) the same?

7900/6700/5700 are all compatible with each other in braking and derailleurs.

for SRAM/shimano 10s compatibility: the rear derailleurs are NOT cross compatible. different pull ratio. the fron derailleurs are cross compatible though.
( i.e. you can't run a sram shifter with a shimano rear derailleur, nor can you run a shimano shifter with a sram derailleur. you CAN however, run a sram shifter with a shimano front derailleur or a shimano shifter with a sram front derailleur.)
brakes between sram and shimano are cross compatible as well. ( note that thsi applies only to 10s. have not tried with 11 s shimano or sram.)

my current setup is sram rival shifters with sram force rear and shimano ultegra 6700 front and sram brakes. I also tried it with shimano 105 5700 shifters and sram brakes. works with no issues.

5700 and 6700 are compatible.

7900 and 5700/6700 are NOT. At least not fully. Front mech pull ratio is way off and (IIRC) using 7900 shifters with a 5700 mech means you need to put a stupid amount of force through the lever to get it to shift.

But you can check everthing out officially here:

I use 5700 shifters with 7900 front and rear derailleurs. Works like a dream, 6700 calipers on that, with Sram Red cassette and cranks with Rotor Q-Rings. There is absolutely no problems with the FD.
