If he's really careful he can borrow them. That's part of the reason he specifically asked for Campagnolo 10 speed.
It's psychological gain for him more than anything else - the placebo effect works on him an absolute treat. I remember when we were out for a ride when he was just 8 - he was flagging and moaning a bit, so I lent him my aero time trial helmet. After that, he absolutely flew home!
