@valant
Is it not more elegant if the join around the bars is only visible from underneath: so that viewed from the rider's perspective there is a single sweep of plastic that holds up the garmin. By way of differentiation from all the other products, I would also think about a mount that was as elegant as possible, even if this meant that it had to be fitted before shifters and tape. Without a firm differentiator I would say that you are going to be one of many.

I would strongly advise NOT making a mount that needs shifters and tape to be removed. No one is going to buy that when all of the alternatives are easy to fit.
The perfect out front mount exists if the best elements from all of the currently available choices were combined into a single unit.
For me, that would be:
For me, that would be:
- Top of Garmin screen level with top of handlebar
Dedicated mounts for 500/510 and 800/810 - so unit sits close to stem face plate
Mounting hardware should be underneath, out of sight
No removal of tape / levers to install
Maximum price of $25 / £20

Me too. But I would advise even less to go to the market with no differentiation over existing products, some from established companies.

all of these mounts are understandably focused on ease of installation/removal, but what about an option that mounts using a stem faceplate - surely that would be a neat solution, and only slightly more effort to fit?

Here's the Tillquist project on his webpage. Not sure if he's taking orders... was designed to work with a 3T stem.

the problem with the k-edge (besides it's weight) is the fact that it's too tight and taking it on and off shaves some of the plastic off an already dubious mount. you can literally see plastic shavings come off the garmin as you attach it the first few times.
