I know there have been pages with info around, some say it will work and some say not.

So who can tell me now:

If i'm going to get some 7900 DA sti's, can i ride with a 6600 Ultegra FD?

I know a 6600 RD will work with the 7900 DA sti.

I maybe want to upgrade to 7900 RD and FD later.

Won't work properly.

Shimano said no. We tried it anyway for fun. Shifting is beyond poor.

So if i want to buy a 7900 DA sti i need the FD also?

Or do you mean shifting on FD and RD will be poor?

In order to get the front shifting to work adequately, you must pair a 7900 fr derr with the 7900 sti levers. Everything else pre-7900 can work just fine with the 7900 levers and all other bits, with the exception that the 7900 sti levers require 7900 brake calipers for optimum braking. 7800 and 6600 calipers will suffice, but braking will be sub-par.

Ok, thanks.

For the brakes, i just bought KCNC CB1 brakes. In other comment i read that the impact for the brakes isn't to big. It will end up with a softer or a harsher feel right?

Can anyone comment on that?

Reviving dead thread. I have 6700 shifters, I moved to DA7900 FD. Front shifting is poor, now I'm surmising that there is a compatibility issue between this due to the lack of trim on DA7900 STI shifters. Can anyone confirm that this is my issue?

I can't comment on the shifting compatibility, as I have 7900 shifters and derailleurs. I have Red brakes, though, and the braking is very weak, so perhaps there is some merit to the 7900 levers needing to be paired with the matching calipers....

What did they change to make the F derr not work? In my past experience front derailleurs have all been compatible, even across brands.

the 7900 FD does not require trim, which indeed the 7900 shifter does not provide

fd 6700 requires trim so does not work with 7900 shifters

i run fd 7900 with 6700 shifters and this works perfectly (it does not hurt to have trim on fd 7900)
