Tinea Pedis wrote:It's funny dj, I only ever read you lambasting Gerrans for being " a wheel-sucking leech" but never praising Fabian for his tactical nonce in pulling 2 other riders all the way to the line...one without the other, strange.

Especially when it was widely appreciated Fabian needed to race smarter.

Could it be that the former rode the smarter finale than the latter? That he was still better than all but one other rider at staying with Fabian off the Poggio and no other rider (read: sprinter) seems to cop the same treatment notwithstanding.

Spare us the constant soapboxing, please.

Cancellara had to pull or they both would have gotten nothing: the gap simply wasn't enough for any hesitation.

From Google:
wheel sucker
A derogatory term, referring to a rider who always sits in and never expends any energy by taking a pull at the front..
nencycling.org/wiki/cycling_vocabulary

I highlight the relevant word. I didn't invent the assertion that riders have a responsibility to contribute something to the success of a break.
The term wheelsucker should only be used with reference to a rider whose MO is that every time. Leipheimer is one who comes to mind, Gerrans isn't.

I read something about the other outer rings on Cancellara's bike. They're special rings that have ramps and pins optimized for use with the larger inner rings (42t in Cancellara's case).

All becomes clear.

I also second ultimobici.

The fact you saw fit to add "leech" notwithstanding.

djconnel,

Haven't you ever been in a break where you're hanging on by the skin of your teeth to stay on the wheel in front of you? If the break is pulling so hard you can't get a turn in because you'll blow, what do you do?

Hang on or do the "moral" thing and drop off to let the break go fight it out because it's the ethical thing to do?

Hell no...I'd hang on with all I've got to see if I could fight it out till the end...

I agree.

Cancellara wins when he's smart, just like at Flandres, when he let Sagan take a pull just before making his move on his favourite section, the Paterberg. He did the same in 2011 if my memory is correct...

When he relies on his "I have the biggest engine, so you must play my game with me" tactic, he's outsmarted by other cyclists.

I hope you guys (the grown ups I mean) don't buy bicycles because of the rider's "hero image"...

Louis :)

Nice to see a picture of the brake track on SVM front wheel. He was trying to readjust the brake deep in the finale with the help of the Mavic Motor, I even thought to see him just loosening the cable of the front brake to a point it would not touch the brake track, and possibly also would not function any more in the last 15-20K. And I didn't hear him complain about it after the race, which makes me respect his ride even more.
Edit: his front brake failure explains perfectly why he couldn't do a track stand and had to leave the 2nd position to Cancellara on the velodrome...

That's not a very generous cutout, though. A pity that the Superflow with a SMP-large cutout also is wider.

About time some other bike company than Trek wins a monument, no? This is getting embarrasing.

Out of curiosity: who are the current doctors of Team Radioshack? Last year Pedro Celaya left the team together with Bruyneel (and good riddance) but it is most intriguing that the team website gives the names of riders, management, massage therapists, mechanics, even down to the busdriver, the cook and the team journalist....but the medical staff is missing. Intriguing if not to say suspicious.

Not really. You don't need the frontbrake to do a trackstand.

I made 2 bets last thursday mostly for fun.
One bet was 70 DKK (Around 12 US dollars) on Lars Bak. Would have given me a small bit over 14000 DKK back (Close to 2500 US Dollars)
The other bet was 40 DKK (7 dollars) on Sep Vanmarcke. Payout = 1050 Dollars
But still, what an amazing ride by Vanmarcke, allthough I think he could have done something else on the velodrome.

@nathan, Offredo posted a picture of his bag with some Specialized white shoes in it.
He usually wears Sidi.
