I've been offered a set of Zipp 404 carbon clinchers(carbon braking surface), and it made me think of whether or not Zipp made 2 versions of this wheelset. I know of the current Firecrest version, but didn't Zipp make a full carbon clincher just before they made the switch to the Firecrest rim profile? Or has it always been the Firecrest?

For Firecrest (they all had 188 rear hubs), the silver ones cannot take a straightforward freehub/axle conversion to go 11speed. however, they can be sent back to Zipp to have the whole rear hub changed out, for a little bit more $$.
