Rumsas, that sounds incredibly clever. I'm going to try to use that trick on an old frame I have laying around, maybe I can hack together a steel road bike.

Re. chainstay widening.... have a look on Sheldon Browns website ,there is a section on converting old frames ! (with pics to make it easy)
