Finally! The first road ride of the season, and first time with my new C59, so my feelings were really good.. 8)

Lakes still covered with one foot of ice and two feet of snow...

But still some slippery spots on the road as you can see... poor unlucky driver

Pico de Las Nieves on Gran Canaria the other day.. rode in the clouds from Telde and through San Mateo etc. before escaping them and feeling the temperature ride to 25 degrees at the top! Nice day.

Took the road bike out for the first time this year. -5 C and sun brought some melting water across the road. Froze my FD.

And yes, those are XC skiing shoes, and that's a hockey stick. Hesjedal is a Norwegian surname after all...

Clocks go forward a week today but winter is back with a vengeance, this in the Chilterns north of Reading. My water bottle was beginning to ice up inside after 90 minutes.

not really on the road, but it gives you an idea of the conditions I raced in yesterday...

this was after 40km and after 3 or 4 stops to clean the bike on road (wooden stick to get the wheels turning and the derailleurs shifting...)

Roadies and MTBers met on the same spot, followed of course different routes and back together to celebrate the rides!

We (roadies) made it sooner to the finish line and tried the special before the others arrive! Cuttlefish with local herbs...

For your roadies that are riding in the snow and frost, what sort of tires do you use for winter? Which sorts of compounds work best for -5 degrees Celsius (or lower?). Is the Vittoria Open Pave the equivalent of a 'winter tire' for your bike?

I use the Schwalbe Ultremo DD now. It's quiet, much more so than the Conti GP4season I used before, which is the noisiest tire I've ever used on a road bike. The late winter roads may be mainly dry, but there is a lot of gravel from the winter mainenance. I've chosen these tires mainly for the increased sidewall protection compared to the Ultremo ZX and GP4000s, and in 25 mm size. I'm 73 kg.
The Open Pavè should be a good alternative. It's just that the green color clashes so enormously with Celeste...
