Like the title says, is it possible to replace the 130 mm axle on a rear road hub, and go to a 135 mm axle ?

I'd like at least to be able to do this on my Ultegra hubs, so they fit on my new commuter/cyclocross project...

Any brand doing it ?...

Louis :)

Chainline might not be optimal, but could you find two 2.5mm spacers and put them on each side of the lock nuts?

A 135mm shimano mtb axle should work no? You'll need additional spacers but it should work.

Mmost Shimano Mtb axles will work. Also need a single 5mm axle spacer. it goes on the left side, and you will need to redish the wheel to the left 2.5mm. Do not try to add two 2.5mm spacers to each side.

How are you going to fit it into the frame?

My CX frame has 135 mm spacing...

thisisatest, why wouldn't adding spacers work ? I guess not enough axle lenght resting on the droppouts ?

Are there any cheap road rim brake rear hub options with 135 mm axle, like BHS for example...?

Louis :)

Sure. It will work!

Ultegra hubs just use plain threaded axle's (no oversized stuff), bike shops usually have them laying around somewhere, or else buy a replacement XT rear axle. I've done it on a couple of beach race MTB's. Just swap the axles out and install a 2.5 mm spacer behind the locknuts on both sides.

thisisatest is reffering to the chainline, I think. But this was the easiest solution, it worked just fine and looks clean.

I've made a Dura Ace 7700 135mm before with an XTR axle swap. If you already have the wheel, the axle/spacer swap is the cheapest way to go and it's completely functional. Add spacer to the left side. No, there isn't enough axle length to add 5mm total to the existing axle and still have enough left in the dropouts.

Thanks for the reply,

I ordered an XT axle this morning (from what I read, they're all chrome-moly anyways).

I'll redish the wheel, give the proper L/R spacing.
Now I'll have to use another rear wheel as my everyday/spring/crappy weather road bike wheel...:( Wait, I'm just building this bike so the road bike will be resting inside on those particular days...:D
