Zipp wheels conversion to Shimano 11sp
Moderator: robbosmans
I would like to find out what people are doing about their pre 2012 Zipp wheels that will not be converted by Zipp to the new Shimano 11 speed standard.
I have 2011 Zipp FC 808 that I would like to convert to 11sp but I am debating whether its worthwhile to rebuild it with a non-Zipp 20H hub or to just replace with a new 808 wheel. I don't think Zipp is selling the new hub alone yet and even if they do, it is likely at a price to make me consider just selling the wheel and buying a new wheel.
If anyone has rebuilt their wheel, what hubs did you use and spoke lacing?
Or any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Way cheaper to just send it back to Zipp to have them convert it to Shomano 11. It's $250 for them to replace the free hub, axle and redish the wheel. I just sent my 404 to be converted.

Have not had our 2012 303 FC rebuilt, but seems to me that if we have to use a spacer for 10-speed cassette, all that would need to run 11-speed is remove the spacer and reddish the wheel.

I already talked to my SRAM rep about this and they conversion only works with 2012 wheels and you have to send to an authorized service facility or back to Zipp for the work.

Remember that Zipp is now owned by sRaM/.....my own thoughts are that I don't think they see a lot of incentive to work very hard to make their wheels backwards compatible for people riding with a competitor's product that now aims to put them (sRaM/) at a disadvantage......so even though they'd offered wheels with virtually the same offset specs (Campagnolo) for years, maybe this time they decided to stand their ground and not get too creative with retro fit options for prior years (besides 2012)....thus hoping this leads to Shimano users to either pony up and buy new wheels or perhaps switch to sRaM/
Any feedback from Zippy engineer Waldo? I appreciate his candid insider responses and I'd take some lumps if my hunch isn't true to some extent

This is really total bullshit. The "old" (ie 2011!!) wheels can work with a Campy freehub body. There is no reason they shouldn't work with a Shimano 11 freehub body.
It is BS,
But it's not on Zipp/SRAM/ Campy/ other wheel / Hub makers.
New Shimano could have been designed to be more easily compatible with the rest of the market...

Won't it work if you install a Campagnolo freehub body and cassette and fit on Shimano 11 ders?
