Mavic R-sys slr problems
Moderator: robbosmans
This is my R-sys slr rim after on day in the rain, with Mavic's own breakepads. Is this normal?
Thanks, Daniel

The pads are brand new. What should i clean the rims with. It looks like the exelith i gone...
Yes. But I heard that Mavic won't accept it as a flaw.
I'm affraid i lost a lot of money here...

And is it safe to keep on riding on?
Safe, yes. But they just look like those standard open pro cd now. One rainy ride and say goodbye to your nice rims.
I'd be seriously pi**d off if Mavic wouldn't change the rim.
There is a mavic rep on this board - I'm sure he'll chime in.

I am pretty angry. But that's no use. Hopefully Mavic will help.
There's a topic where we talk about that issue (you aren't alone ) :

That is the first time I see a picture of the problem. To be honest, I did not expect that the rim would look so nasty.

I don't get it. Mavic developed completely new technology that was advertised as much more resistant than the ceramic coating they used before and now it seems that the old ceramic coating worked almost flawless (until the last few years when they had quality problems) as opposed to the Exalith.
A light bike does replace good fitness.
from what i know, mavic will do something about it, its just not acceptable otherwise given that it happened within a certain time period and under acceptable conditions, ie, correct pads (of course rain is okay)
take a look here, the mavic guy has posted on this thread about this on page 7.

High braking performance The Mavic exclusive Exalith 2 technology for aluminum rims has been refined to provide a very high level of durability and braking performance in all weather conditions.
■Braking distance shortened by 18% in wet conditions, while keeping pads wear to normal level
■Exalith treatment penetrates the alloy to delay rim wear and maintain distinctive anthracite grey color for thousands of kilometers

Talked to Zack from Mavic and he was quit surprised.
As I write, my wheels are at my local bikeshop. The where all so quit suprised of the way the wheels looked after a day with mother nature and the rainy roads of Denmark.
They took the wheels right in, and are calling Mavic first thing tomorrow. They expect Mavic to want they're wheels back. And by all means. Hoping for a new set. They cost around 2000€ in DK.

2 things: firstly, it's not Mavic technology (UK company called Keronite), and secondly, the old ceramic coating didn't work in the wet - they pulsed *horrendously*.
From what I've heard you either have issues or you don't with pre-2013 Exalith. It sounds like a lot of work has gone into the newer ones (and the new pad design and compound), although the brake track doesn't actually look or feel any different.
I was tempted by the 2013 R-SYS SLR tubs, but I need to take a different route now.
